Starting A Daycare

Hey there, mommies! Just wondering if any of you have ever tried starting your own daycare business? I am a certified teacher and mother of one boy, 17 months. I very much would like to have a job where I can take him with me, and I of course love working with kids since I'm a teacher (elementary school). It seems as though the daycare business is one of the few businesses that are actually thriving nowadays, so I've been doing some research. I have a friend, another certified teacher and mother of a little boy (13 months) who is interested in going into business with me. If you have started your own daycare centre, or home-based daycare, would you happen to have any tips to offer us? Greatly appreciated, thanks!

I don't have a day care but I worked as a director in one. The most important is that you read all the state regulations and be sure to keep everything in law. Make sure to have all the pertinent permissions before start your business. A good promotion is vital to make it work. You need to see how many kids you are allowing to have according to the space in the premises. Respecting to the kids. Of course a good care is primordial, you need to do a lesson plan every month with all the activities you are planning to do with them. Try to make a good a balance between the time you are spending to teach them and the other activities like play. You should include a time for nap in your lesson plan. Make sure to always keep the ratios in every room. Keep everything clean and nice, including kids, toys, and the physical facilities. The food should be healthy for them, not junk food. One of the most important things I advise you is to stick to your rules. And this apply with the kids, employees and parents. Well, these are some of the thousand tips I can give. Hope it helps. If you have any question just send me a private message. I will be glad to help you.

Of course. Any time. Just an advise, if you are planning to do this you should start in a house with just a few kids. The paper work and regulations is significantly reduced this way.

i would love also to take care of children^^ even more those that dont have parents or dont have people caring for them. i would like to help them showing that they are not alone and have care^^ i think all children need to feel loved and play a lot^^ so i guess that you and your friend will be great to them. my advise for you is to maybe post an announce in a paper offering yourself to take care of those children and after awhile you and your friend will have enough money to open a little school to take care of them^^ the best for you and for her^^

Thanks so much! We are definitely trying to find the best way to go about funding. I think that's going to be our most difficult headache. The end goal is definitely to have a rewarding business looking after kids, for sure. But it's going to be a pain cutting through the paperwork first!

For me yes it is good so that you have time to be good when you are in grade one.

I got interested in your post because I was also thinking of having one. However, if it takes a lot of paperwork, I might just forget about it.

Cutie18f, I think it's going to be a lot of paperwork. As a matter of fact, my friend and I are just in the research stage and there's already been a ton of paperwork. Developing a business plan is a mountain of paperwork in itself! Anyway, hopefully you can learn from the responses to my post, like I am. Check up with this thread frequently since it seems to be generating a lot of traffic. :)
