There you are going about your busy day. You are well organized and getting lots done. You enter a room. Stop. Look around. Why did I come into this room??? What am I in here for???? Sometimes you can walk out of the room, think for a while and it comes to you. Other times, you might never know. If you tell people about it, they will say it's old age creeping up on you. I've seen some pretty young people experience this. How about you??? Have you ever entered a room only to realize you don't know why you went there??

Oh yes, it happens to me at times. Usually if I go the the room I just came from, I can remember why I'm in the current room. I really don't believe it has anything to do with age - I'm still young. I think it happens because there are just too many things going on all at once. There's only so much multi-tasking a person can do before the brain short circuits.

Right, I try not to overload my plate and for the most part, I do that. It's just those few times when life seems to happen all at once. I agree with you that it can get harder with age. Not that I'm old or anything like that, but when I'm around those who are older, I hear and see it from them often. I've been warned about the 'Golden Years' - that they're not so golden.

We all have the ability to choose how we value things. We all will choose how we will define golden. I've decided even if my physical body falls apart, I'm going to make my golden years Glorious!!!

Yes, multi-tasking. When we are dealing with so many things it's easier to forget one of them. Maybe we should take a few things off our plate so we aren't so busy. I think you are right that age doesn't matter but I bet it's easier to get overloaded the older one gets.

Oh yes, that's a good one. Be talking then forget what you were going to say next. They say if you can't remember that it wasn't important in the first place. I don't think that is always true.

It used to happen to me when I was younger and much busier. Now that I'm older and living a life of relative leisure, it rarely happens...go figure!

Not smarter bird, you become wiser. You realise things more clearly. Your perception of things is clearer. You can see better where you went wrong with what you did and what you should have done instead. It's a bit late when you are suffering the consequences of the mistakes you made of course...knowing finally, what is going on is the wise part.

Ok now we have the cure!! We must live a life of relative leisure. The problem with that is, few tend to choose that route. Then again, maybe when we get older we will get smarter.

Hi bird! This just happened to me a couple of hours ago. I was arranging my laundry and taking my clothes from the hanger outside our house. I went inside my room and totally forgot why I did! I had to think back on the things I was doing just to recall what I was supposed to do in my room. It took me ten seconds to recall what I was supposed to do. And the irony of it was that it was connected with my laundry! I had to get the clothes I left in my room and hang them outside and I totally forgot about it! I think this was because aside from what I was doing, I was thinking of another thing, other things. But I really can't believe myself whenever this happens to me. Cheers.

Yes, a little distraction and it's so easy to leave it all behind us for the new. That won't get the laundry done. Of course, you are lucky you remembered what you were doing. I have a friend who started their car and got distracted. They found their car running the next day. OOOOOOOh! those gas prices!!, not to mention feeling really dumb. This happens to us all. I'm just glad I didn't have to buy a tank of gas for it like my friend.

hahahah that's pretty funny but I think we all do it. There are times that our minds are fully occupied with something then we will go somewhere then realize why I ma here what will I want to get from here? then you go out again then you remember what you want to get in the room. That's true.

Well, at least I know I am not alone in this. It doesn't happen to me all the time, but when it does happen to me, it drives me CRAZY! I can't say if it happens when I have more things going on in my life, but I am pretty sure it does not just happen to just the elderly.

Hi bird: Yeah! This may sound stupid but sometimes your brain gets frozen and you simply forgot what you were doing. It also has happened to me that I am talking about something and in the middle of the conversation I forgot about the main thing I am talking about or what I was planning to say next. ALVARO

Oh yes, many times. I think the older experience this more often. Forgetting why you went into a room may also be a sign of stress. I don't think it's only about the memory. As for me, forgetting things for the moment mostly occur when something else disturb my attention. So it can happen to young people also because of the stressful life full of information where attention must be active all the time.

Yes, I think stress and distraction help it along. Perhaps we all need to relax more. We can also make choices so our lives aren't so busy. Of course much of this can be easier said than done. We do have choices we can make. You say it happens more often with age. I know even young people get it, however I haven't noticed it happening more often the older I get. Hmmm?? I guess it's something to look forward to. Hmmm? Now if I could only remember???????

Yeah, it happened to me too. I would try to retrace my thought and usually I came to me again what I should do or take from the room. It may be because of old age but it cal also because of a hectic day when we think faster than our action...

Oh, I see. That's why we caught you wandering around lost to the world. Life a bit too busy for you??? Yes, I know that feeling as well. The same thing happens to me. I think I'm going to relax and not worry at all. I see I'm not the only one going through this. I'm going to kick my feet up and RELAX.

In most cases, I don't think age has nothing to do with this. I hate to see older people blame things like this on age. In my case I know when I am very busy and thinking about several things it's easy to forget little details. I call it being on over load :)
@bird123 (10643)

Well now, I don't think it's always being overloaded. There have been cases when I wasn't loaded at all. You are right about too many people blame things on aging. This one has happened to young people too. Older people carry lots of wisdom. We should never assume it's lost to aging.

Very ture..it isn't necessarily being overloaded. I just find when I have a lot on my mind and am thinking of different things, I sometimes forget little things, but then I do remember. Older people do indeed carry wisdom even if we don't always want to hear about it :)

Yes, I do that sometimes. I did the other day as a matter of fact. I went to get a bag to put in the garbage can in my bathroom and bedroom and started thinking about other things I needed to do and went in the kitchen to get the little bags and forgot what I went in there for. So then I started doing something else and saw that the bags weren't in the cans and I said oh that's why I went in there. lol

At least you forgot a problem that you couldn't help but notice later. I know sometimes I never do remember what I forgot. Distraction can cause it a lot I think.

For sure I have done this lots of times. I probably do at least once a week. Sometimes it is one of my kids distracting me and sometimes it is just me forgetting what I was headed for. I do it on line too. I will think that I want to go to a certain web site, and then a minute later I will say "Now what web site was I about to go to." Very frustrating.

It hasn't caught me online yet, but it's terrible around the house. Maybe we are getting too relaxed letting our focus wander. In any event it can be a real pain.

Yes, I have to admit I do that alot, I'll think of something that might be in the bedroom, so I start heading to the bedroom then when I get in there, I just stop and think what was I coming in here for?lol. I guess its just a normal thing, most of the time we've probably got something else on our mind, then we forget what we were doing for a moment. Yeah, I just had my 40th bday, so I'm getting that alot, people telling me that old age is creeping up on me..haha.

Well they want to blame everything on old age. This one gets the young folks as well. Don't worry. If I catch you wandering around, I'll ask you where you are going. See if you have an answer.

This has always happened to me a lot, so it's not just cause I am getting older. I have difficulty walking, so when I go in a room I try to do everything I need to do in there. If I remember something that is good. There have been numerous times that I have left the room and then remember something else I wanted to do there! There have been many times that I have wanted to ask someone something, then when I talk to them I forget until after we hang up. I have gotten in the habit of calling them back or when I think about what it was I wanted to ask them before I forget again. Sometimes I write myself notes of things I want to mention to someone and then forget to look at the note!

Yes, notes and to do lists can help a lot. More good advice is when you tell people do it as soon as you think of it. Don't give yourself time to forget. Multitasking can leave many things forgotten.

Yes. This has happened to me on numerous occasions usually involving me walking into the basement and then having to walk back up the stairs to figure out why I walked down in the first place. What's worse is when you are looking for something, but it turns out to be in your left hand or otherwise on your person. I lose my cell phone quite often, but at least that you can have someone call so you can retrieve it. I'd say I misplace it every week almost and takes a minute to find each time. I normally don't have to call it.

Yes, that's a good one. I have looked for a misplaced item almost in a panic only to find it in my hand or pocket. Funny how we can become blind to things right in front of our nose.
