These days I live within easy walking distance of a train station. It is about half an hours walk. In usually drive down there and when I am with my disabled son I can park my car in a disabled parking bay.
When I lived in a village I lived a few miles from a rural train station. I had to cycle my bike to it and it was before I had passed my practical driving test. I has to ride my bike down narrow country lanes, up a hill and along a bit of a cycling path.
I have noticed that a city train station can be far from the center of the city where the shopping area is. In Bristol the train station is called Bristol Temple Meads. Then people have to go by bus to the center. From some coastal train stations it can be a long walk to the beach.
Do you live within walking distance of a train station?
How do you get to your nearest train station?
What do you like about traveling by train?

We have recently moved from suburban living to the country and there is a train station near by. We can see the trains pass by from our property which I really enjoy.. it is much different then the city trains in the big city. It's not noisy or congested. There is something tranquil about everything in the countryside...

Yes I have many train stations within a close range. In particular the one at Manchester airport is closest as I live just around the corner from the airport but, I rarely use the trains to be honest unless I am going to London and then I will use the one from Manchester city centre whihc if I get a lift to usually takes just about 10 mins or so.

train?
we have recently gotten "light rail" here in town, but since I don't live near a station and I don't work downtown it is USELESS for me!
Honestly, its a waste of tax payers money and honestly, we voted against it, but it got shoved down our throats anyway!

maximax8,
I do not think living close to train stations to be "enjoyable" where for one, it would be a noisy environment to be in with the trains and people in the vicinity. However, it would be an ideal place for business considering the vast human traffic.
Over the years of my travels, I would prefer the trains over airplanes in certain countries starting with Japan where a trip from Tokyo to Osaka on their direct high speed trains to be as fast as the flights. Furthermore, arriving by train usually brings me closer to the city central and commence my business right upon arrival than by air where airports are really a distance.
In China, I believe you've already heard about their various high speed trains that are running within the country. An example would be their train running between Guangzhou (South) and Wuhan (Middle) which in the past would take an average of 18 hours is now being reduced to 3 hours. It is just so convenient where business could be conducted and conclude all within 1 day.
Train travels have improved a lot with time and as far as comfort is concern, I have to say that they sometimes could be better than airplanes. However, I believe the concern would be cost where the business here would be taking a beating from the low cost airlines.

I enjoyed traveling by train when I was in Europe, but it isn't so practical here. There is a train station downtown, I believe, but I've never been there.

I live very near a train station. It's just a 5 minute walk from my house. Going by trains lets me skip heavy road traffic. My kids love to travel by train. Whenever we're walking towards the train station, my kids would ask excitedly, "mommy, are we riding the train?" Whenever we ride the train, my kids would make chugchug-choochoo sound even if the train runs on electricity and makes no such sounds.

I would love to travel by train, but they make it so expensive to do so in this country! It's much cheaper to drive or fly than take the train. I would like to take the train out to Palm Springs or something like that, but it costs too much. Even going from San Diego to Los Angeles is more than twice the cost of gas even with gas prices these days. I wish they wouldn't make it that expensive.
I don't have a train station near me, it's about 12 miles away, so it's not too far. I do have a trolley station near me. Their rates are kinda expensive, but not too bad. You can buy a day pass for $5 and ride all you want on the buses and the trolley.

hi maximax,
in my entire life, i have seen a train and a train station only 4 times. the rest are the metro rail trains, not the usual trains that travels long distances.
in my place, trains are not available. for long distance, we travel by bus.
i think it is only in luzon that has a train. and i live in mindanao, the southern part of the philippines.
have a nice day.

Unfortunately, we live far from the nearest train station that goes directly to the middle of the city. We live in a suburb, and the end of the light rail tracks is still another city over. It's about a 25-minute drive.
There have been plans to extend the tracks up to where we are. And I've also read that there are actually tracks already laid underneath the ground. But that's still a few years far away.
