Talk about thinking outside the box. Mayfield taught himself how to play guitar, tuning it to F# in concert with the black keys on the piano and he sang in falsetto register. This was pure genius and contributed to Mayfield’s distinctive sound, which carried him to fame.
Mayfield was multi-faceted: he sang, played guitar and piano, played drums + other instruments. Before he created Pusherman and the album Superfly, Mayfield worked with other artists, and was co-founder of the group The Impressions.
He was a prolific songwriter and wrote many hits before his solo career. In Superfly, Mayfield’s lyrics shone a spotlight on black urban ghettos via socially conscious soul music. Pusherman is considered the major vocal theme of Superfly.
With its incredible percussive effects and distinctive sound, Pusherman has garnered fans the world over.
