Actually i also did not know the meaning before. But after being on MYLOT i got the answer for it. Star actually you get once you reach 100 responses & it is actually your reflection of your reputation on MYLOT which is decided by MYLOTTERS.More you get good ratings from MYLOTTER more better will be your star. It gets fluctuated with the rating of your responses. It is not necessary if a person is having 10 rating cannot slip to 9 it happens depends on the ratings he get.
Mine was 5 2 days before then it slipped to 4 & now it is stuck on 3.I beleive i will improve it if i do post good responses. You too can improve it.As i also asked in one discussion about significance of star i got reply from oldies it effects your earning also.

The stars represent the status of an user. People who have 10 and a blue star are people who have best responses and users who are ranked high. If you can see, when someone else comments on something or makes a new discussion, there is a plus, a minus, and an exclamation point. The plus is to rate the user high and the minus is to rate the user low. The better users rate you, the better it is. For more info, visit here: http://www.mylot.com/o/faq/faq17.aspx

Best responses do not affect our star and indeed users with low stars can also receive a best response. Best responses do not affect our earnings either while the star does.

This discussion also spoke of the stars and the Discussion Rating System (DRS) and you might find it helpful too:

Thanks for the information. I have been curious for this since I started joining mylot. I will try my best to reach 100-post threshold and see what level I will be rated.

Yes there is. A user with a higher star will earn more for their posts than a user with a lower star.
MyLot explain it in the FAQs here:
