How do you feel when you hear someone say that their work is freelance?

I used to not understand what freelance actually means as a job when I was still employed full time. But I resigned my previous work and wanted to switch careers on graphics since it was my original passion and it has not been so easy. I got employed on a work from home/freelance basis. Although my earnings are not as much before. I am kind of happy that I can still generate income while I am looking for a full time job. But questions are asked among family and friends and they ask if I have a job and most of them do not understand how freelance works so in the end I either say I am freelancing or I don't have a job yet. I am keen on posting for job posts but luck hasn't been on my side so while I am at it I find freelance work. What do you feel when you learn someone is working freelance? Do you think that they are lazier because they do not have a full time job? Or do you consider it as a job? Is

Well, I work as a freelancer for quite some time and I have the same experience when I'm with company, be it friends and relatives. This pretty much gives me in an awkward state since people would inquire about what I do and how much I earn. Sometimes,I just keep quiet or inject another distracting conversation. I don't mind being a freelancer but I do feel the pressure of getting a 'stable' job and a 'stable' wage. If I learn of another freelancer in the area, I would probably go to him and talk to him/her for the whole evening in a quiet corner, At least someone knows my pain and what I go through. I don't need to explain myself or defend myself on certain points. In my view, being a freelancer is not being lazy. It's doing what you want to do within a time and an industry with not so many opportunities. At least, I'm not doing a crime or anything illegal. And most of all, I am enjoying what I do, no matter the salary rate. A freelance is always a job. It's not just a regular job but a job all the same. When you get paid for what you do, it's a job...and a job worth keeping.

I feel for you that is exactly how I feel. I am earning a decent amount although not as big as my previous payroll but it kind of gives me a sense of enjoyment. It's good for you that you get to find a fellow freelancer, for me it's hard to find a fellow freelancer that can understand this nature work. And because of that I constantly feel the pressure to find the so called "stable" job and company to work to which is hard actually T_T I too consider this a job although most would probably not consider it. Which is kind of sad too..

Yes, I am lucky to find another freelancer though she is more 'stable' becuase she has a day job. She then bothers me when she feels that she's loosing her mind doing too many jobs at the same time. In terms of people with 'stable' jobs, I guess they find it in themselves to adjust to the constant routine (I don't know what I do if I were in their place). As a freelancer, I have the liberty to work when I need to and take a break if I want to. Best regards to your career!

Yes, most people won't understand what freelance means. I have been working as A FREELANCE for almost four years as a part time job and many would know what it is, then its their problem. I am enjoying my freelancing because I earn some extra cash and these extra cash is helping me meet and pay expenses.

I am enjoying it too and great work on your side to be able to continuously work freelance in the span for four years. Are you doing graphics too or web designing?

Well, I encounter people don't believe that I can make money online. They say that this is impossible to earn money on the net without leaving home. I don't blame if they think about it. The important thing to me now, is that I can make money online and I don't want to show with them any proof...because I know they can't believed it

Hi enciel, That you are put into an awkward situation when people ask what your job is or how much you earn is the lack of knowledge of the term 'freelance'. Though I have a full time job I am a correspondent to one English paper published from our state capital. I like new reporting and did a course on journalism and mass communication. When I hear people saying 'frelence' I understand what it is. Had I not got the present jom may be I too took up 'freelancing'.

Freelancers --others take u as if a person without any work. In some cases it is correct also. I am a retired person . I do freelancing teaching --I am busy at leat for 10 days in a month. Balance days I relax - watch movies, go to temples. Of course here in usa, I have no other work but to sit before laptop and browse pages for earning a few dollar more. have a good day

I think Freelancing is getting superiority over regular jobs as it differentiates from others with freedom. So you ca call it self employed independent job. Nothing to tbe ashamed.

I work freelance and the independence is outstanding. Most of my friends understand. those who do not can just ask and I will tell them. Yes, it is "real work." It is not loafing and scrounging, at least not the way I do it. I guess you could call yourself a contractor. Maybe they would understand that better. Or maybe then they would call you when their plumbing leaks.

Usually when I am hearing "freelance" it is a person that is usually an ARTIST! and sometimes being freelancer is an advantage because as an artist they could decide the rate that clients would pay it to them. There are expert artist that are freelancers and most likely they can really demand for the rates. When I applied a job in a company some staff told me that they don't really like freelancers it is because they are asking for the high rate. Though the disadvantage for that is most likely the stability and assurance. I've been like this for years already and we have not given a contract that is why my boss was the one who decide to give me the rate. It has many reasons why other are doing their freelance job. It could be their sideline as well, much comfortable with it or that is the only choice that they can make since they were not accepted in some companies. Aside from that they can still have the free time. I could not say that they are lazy because if that is freelance artist then most likely they would still handle the pressure.

i've been a freelancer for years already and freelancing is a decision that you can make it on your own. if i hear someone say he's a freelancer, it means that he is skillfull, independent and has a number of back clients. at the end of the day, its all about your output. the more your work gets recognized, the higher you can charge and you dont need a moody, demanding boss again because you are the boss now.

Just tell them that you are a consultant instead. If they ask what that means, it means its like a business but instead of selling stuff, you sell your services, at your own term and your own time. Some people only understand 9 to 5 jobs. But more and more people I think will pick it up.

there are many kinds of freelance jobs. freelance writer (my job), freelance visual artist, etc. freelance basically means that you will have no definite boss. if you're a freelance writer, you can write for boss #1 and #2 at the same time. im a freelance writer for 2 years already, but it's not that easy. once you decide to be a freelance writer you have to be patient and be able to adjust quickly to your boss's attitude and to the new rules you have to follow.
