Unisex Toilets - Not A Big Fan

The weather finally improved for the Bank Holiday and the plan was to visit a rather nice garden nursery on the outskirts of Penrith. I was worried that the plants on offer would be out of our price range but, fortunately, they were reasonable so both myself and Mum bought a few to liven up our gardens.
Anyway, after drinking an obligatory cup of tea in the restaurant we "needed the toilet" so proceeded to where they were situated.
What a disappointment!
There were (not one) but two unisex toilets. This perturbed me somewhat as I couldn't help thinking.."well, why not have one ladies loo and the other for the guys?"
I refused to go in.
Eventually, Mum was desperate enough to have to use one of the unisex toilets "which was OK" but I chose to go to an absolutely awesome LADIES toilet in a nearby pub called the George & Dragon. It had a posh sink, posh toilet and gorgeous lavender handwash and lotion.
Now, that's my idea of a decent ladies washroom!
What are your views on unisex versions? Would you use one if you were desperate or wait?
I chose to wait!

I would have used the unisex one. Then probably would have still needed one again later and gone to the one you liked. I go frequently.

i have never been that comfortable with unisex toilets. men should have theirs and women should have theirs also. only if it is a space factor would i see any benefit from it.

I was gonna say the same thing. If the purpose is not to save space, then what's the point of having a unisex toilet? When they have room for two toilets, they should have made one for each right? Mind Boggling!

My thoughts exactly! Also, the garden centre itself obviously cost a lot of money to develop, so I was a tad annoyed at the "after-thought" of the toilets.

I don't like unisex toilets either. We can't know how the other ladies will use the ladies room but it seems to me that most of the man don't care about the hygene. When I am using the ladies room I feel more relaxed but if I had to use a unisex toilet I try not to touch anywhere close the taps with napkins open the door with napkins also. It feels uncomfortable to me too :)

Hi Janey, This is quite uncomfortable. Though i have never come across one, but i always prefer a separate one for woman and man. And its gives a hesitant feeling to have something set like that, I wish they should change it and i would not use it but not sure what if its so desparate, just thinking.lol.

Fortunately, I was able to have a choice on this occassion and wait until we drove to the nearby pub. If there hadn't been a choice I would've had to use the unisex toilet..begrudgingly!

I go, but only after making sure it isn't too dirty!
I find I'm happier if the person attending the facility (restaurant, gas station, whatever) is female... honestly, you can look at the way a building is kept on the more public areas and know if the bathroom is kept nice or not...

Mum said the cubicle was OK but she only went in because she was desperate. I could hold mine in until I went into the pub..and I was so relieved the toilet in there was fab..as toilets go lol. I've been on the look-out for lavender handwash ever since but no joy as yet!

Hello Janey
I think the point was that men spend less time (theoretically) in the toilet, so women would have a better chance of getting a free toilet.
But in the case above you mentioned there were 2 unisex toilets, so they might of just use one female and one male.

I couldn't understand why there wasn't a cubicle for the women and another for the guys. Most confusing!

I tell you Janey I would have to be bursting to use a unisex loo, as I would not be comfortable using them. I certainly do not want to be in the washroom and have a man walk in.
While I understand that a family setting one is okay, somehow with unisex ones I just could not be comfortable, besides the pub one sounds fun and hey a lager too.

The door could be locked so no-one could barge in but I'm the same as you..I just don't feel comfortable going into a cubicle with both the male and female signs on the door lol.
By the way, the lager was lovely. Shame about the food though..typical rip-off Cumbrian fare!

If i'm too desperate i wouldn't be able to wait at all. I am prone to urinary tract infection as I'm very fond of holding back my urge especially when i'm travelling which i do every weekend.
And yes i'm sad that there still exist unisex toilets around my city and it's such a disappointment. But i don't have much choice when i really need to go, so i guess i have to put up with it.

It all depends. In a moment of desperation, there is no time for you to nit-pick the toilets and have nothing to do but put up with it.There are such toilets too here ,but they are usually for one person only and can lock the door inside them.

not a big fan at all! women have a hard time with unisex toilets since they have to squat and, God forbid, might slip and sink her butt in the forsaken, foul bowl! while guys never have this kind of problem. they'd pee on the side of the road for all they care! but, for me, i'd wait. unless, my bladder explodes from holding it, i'd go anywhere, even in a bush if i have to. haha!

That reminds me of the two times I have been in the great outdoors when I just HAD to go for a wee. The first time was on the way to a Rock Festival with two guys I knew. In the queue outside the Festival site (in the car) I was desperate for a wee. Because I knew there was a fair way to go in the car before our destination I chose to get out the car, squat behind a bush in a field and enjoy a VERY long wee. There was a load of grass about too so I could wipe myself properly on it. It was either that or wee myself in the car. I was encouraged by the sight of a whole load of other people doing exactly the same thing as the queue of cars was so slow-moving that people were able to get out of their cars, go for a wee in the field and get back to the car without the driver even having moved!!
The second time I was desperate to wee was on a night out, therefore it was dark. There were no taxis in the area to get me home so I ended up weeing in someone's front garden. Fortunately, I didn't wake anyone up, otherwise they may have got on the telephone and reported me to the police.
Thank God I was quiet lol.

hI janey at my age I cannot always wait so yes I would choose one of them and do the best I could for cleanliness and get the heck
out of that unisex thing.I noticed in government offices like social security it had unisex toilets too but there they were really
clean and tidy too.You had a way to shut the door so nobody could get in and there was a guard outside the door.

I guess I'm old-fashioned as I hate unisex toilets. I dunno why but I find them creepy.

That's an interesting concept. I've never really heard of this sort of thing before. I think that it would get some time for me to get used to. I might use them if I really absolutely need to go to the bathroom, but I would wait if I could hold it. I think that it would be the idea that I would need to get used to, just because it's not something that you see very often, if at all.

I suppose the strangest aspect of this are guys and gals being in the SAME QUEUE! Now, that doesn't happen very often!

I won't be at peace if Im using the unisex toilet. I won't be able to do my things in the toilet for fear there might be peeping toms especially men!
