A teacher should be friendly, firm, understanding but not exactly a friend though. See students do not know how to delineate a teacher from a friend and here especially students lack a lot of respect sometimes and for a teacher to be a friend they must always be respected.

i am with you on this one my friend. I am also an instructor, a teacher of 3D animation. In my class i dont put a line between me and my students coz i want to have an open communication with them. we are all equal basically, so why feel superior or whatsover. The best learning environment one could be in is in a friendly and loving envirionment. :)

Dear friend,
I feel the teacher should be able analysis the student accordingly to aspects like being friends, strict, humorous, like these qualities are to be taken. As each student possess different characters, the way of treating them also differs. Off course teachers should be friendly but if they feel it could give a positive result on that student. Moreover I feel most students do like to have harsh and strict teachers. Hence I feel it would be better to deal with students without harming them physically and emotionally.

Yes, a friend with something very special incommon. The wish to learn. And many a teacher learns from their students. If they are open ofcourse. I think a teacher is only as good as his students will let him/her be. there is something special about a teacher that befriends his students and doesn't put up a wall.

Hi DoctorDidi!
There are many roles a teacher play or take on inside and outside the classroom. And the different roles come to play in different situations. All of which need to be balanced and tempered with reason and compassion.
If you are too friendly with students, they tend to misinterpret this and go overboard thinking you are equal which you are not. And it may become difficult for you to exercise your authority inside and outside the classroom when this happens. It is a judgment call in every situations.
Cheers.

For me not inside the classroom. A teacher should be a teacher inside the classroom. He/she could be the students' friend outside. There are students who do not follow their teachers command and so lax with their studies, and the teacher should see to it that his/her students are learning well.

No. The best teachers are friendly and approachable but they are teachers not just friends.

I worked as a teacher for 2 years and more. It is fine to be like a friend in the class room, but in these days, students are so smart and so that a friendly atmosphere make more convenient as well. However, while teaching and learning, the difference should understand by the students and teacher as what is their positions. Being a teacher and behaving like a friend may cause spoil the relation by exploiting the standards. Also, this approach will be varied from the age of students. If the level of students with a less than high school, the friendly approach will help the students to learn fearlessly while higher level classes, the students may exploit the friendship in different ways. But an understanding between the students and teachers would help so solve many of such issues.
