Miami's had the proverbial monkey on their backs all season. If they don't win the NBA Championship, they're officially a busted squad. And not only that - they'll have to win in convincing fashion, at least 4-2, to kill the criticisms about how well they meld on the court.
Personally, I cannot see the Heat playing up to the level they played vs. Boston and Chicago vs. Dallas and the Mavs' dual-headed offensive attack.
Miami demolished both the Bulls and Celtics, to their well deserved credit. But let's be honest about the opponents. Boston is the senior league softball team and Chicago is a one-man band. Miami is leaps and bounds better than those teams, especially in the second half of games. But with the Mavericks, JJ Barea coming in gives them a completely different offense, and the Mavs' bench players are pure scorers.
For the series, I like the Mavs.
For tonight's game, I think Miami will come out playing fast and hard. They'll ignore Bosh down low--it's up to him to get involved with rebounding and assertiveness--and Wade will penetrate the ball while LeBron owns the perimeter. By half and midway through the third quarter, I won't be surprised to see the Heat with a double-digit lead. But I expect the Mavs to surge back and make it a nail-biter in the fourth quarter. I think the Heat will win tonight, but I expect that Dallas' persistence over the second half of games will be too much for Miami in the series.
All that aside, I'm just glad the Finals are finally here! I'm tired of waiting.
