When do you start mowing your grass after the winter has gone?

Now that winter is over and the summer is here ut's time for the grass to start growing again. It doesn't take long for the grass to take off and before you know it the yard looks like a jungle. When do you start to mow after the winter? do you wait until summer or do you start mowing as soon as the grass starts to grow again?

@SAvyPat--llamas graze, right? Do you have anything else that consumes your pasture?

You wait until the ground is thawed and the grass is growing. You would have to check and see what zone you are in and then see when professional mowing companies are beginning their season. I would think that you would start mowing when the grass is growing again but I would check first and see.

Depends on alot of factors. When the earth thaws after winter, how much sun it gets, etc.

Personally since we live in Tacoma, WA which is like 40 mins from Seattle, we have a lot of rain here during the Spring so you have to start mowing at least by April or you will have a jungle for sure. It can be a lot of time and work to keep your yard looking nice so when it rains a lot doing it more than once a week is sometimes required. Having your yard looking nice for others is a good thing.

You know, I am glad that I do not have to worry about all that. I live in New York City, there is no grass in front or in back of my house. All I do is hose down the concrete. Maybe if I want grass, I could just paint the concrete green. I do know that when the grass starts growing, you should not wait until it's a jungle. When it starts getting long, just mow it and try to keep up with it until winter.

I usually wait to mow until the grass is actively growing and green, and the lawn's dry enough so I don't make ruts in the lawn. Once it gets a few inches up, it's time for a mowing. I live in northern Ohio, and if I waited until summer to mow, it would be too tall to even get a mower through it. Here, in the spring, we often have to mow it twice a week until later in June or July when it slows down it's growth some. This year, we had the rainiest May in our areas history, so it's been a real challenge to get out there and mow even though it's growing so fast. The lawn is like walking on a sponge lol.

I generally wait until there is not likely to be a ground frost. Grass begins to grow at 45 deg F (and only quite slowly then). If it is damaged by cutting just before a frosty night, it takes it a lot longer to recover because the growing point (which is in the centre of the plant) is damaged and exposed.

Spring comes earlier here, I guess. I try to put it off until Easter in case I want to hide eggs, but usually by the end of April I am mowing. Right now it looks like we need to mow twice a week.

There's not really a difference if you're worried about damaging the mower, I would mow as soon as there is enough grass for you to consider mowing.

Sometimes the grass is ready to mow before we are. If you take good care of your mower, you should have no problems in keeping up.
