Your baby can read

I tried this on my child when she was only 1 year old and it did not work. It did not work mainly because she could not sit still to finish one dvd. She just waits for the songs and when it comes to the reading parts, whe sould get some other things to distract her like her toys. Some people also criticized this program because they say it promotes memorization and not actual reading. As for me, I stopped using it because I don't think it fits my child's personality. Now, she's 3 1/2 and starting school in a few days. I will just let her learn at her own pace. Besides, I don't see the benefits of having a child who can read before she can even walk or talk.

I think a better question is...why do you want your baby to be able to read? I am a child development specialist for my state's early intervention program and I often wonder that when parents tell me about purchasing that program. Depending on their age, young children are capable of rote memorization of some of those sight words in the program, however I am not sure how much it would translate into better reading skills in school than any other child. There are so many more things that children need to learn when they are young. Young children need to develop their imaginative play skills and problem solving. They also will be learning concepts such as size differences, colors, shapes, etc. These things are learned through play, not sitting in front of a video or flash cards for hours a day. Hope this gives your something to thing about. I think reading should not a priority for children 3 and under. Let them play and learn naturally, so they can gain the foundation skills needed for the higher level learning that comes later.
