hello mylotters,
Most Indian eat bread instead of rice name it chapatti, roti, pratha and many more I can say it is not an easy to make one the simplest is chapatti I tried to made one at my Indian friend house every time I am ther but I am not good at it but at least I tried to make one just can't perfect it so instead I cooked potato masala.
But I can eat 5 chapatti in one sit with chicken curry so every time I am there I am wandering around their kitchen and Madam is laughing at me teasing that I can be an Indian wife
So mylotters did you try to make chapatti?
How was it do you like it?

Hi Bhabhy!
You are right that preparing Indian bread called 'Chapati' or 'Parantha' is not very simple specially for those who are not used to it. However, with regular practice one can bake good 'Chapatis'. When you make chapatis, do not look at its perfectness or perfect shape, just see if they are rightly baked on iron plate.

I told you that it is not necessary that 'Chapatis' should be made in perfect circular shape. Those who can make it fine and those who can not make absolutely right circle, it is also fine. What matters is that it is baked properly so it could be eaten with chicken curry or something like that.
Keep trying! All the best.

I learnt to make chappathis only after I was married and my older son was a year old. We are from South India and we have rice and not chappathis. Chappathis are an addition from North India. Plus, I wasn't very adept at cooking when I was married. It's not like I've never eaten or didn't know what chappathis were.
Now, I know how to make chappathis but they are not perfect circles like my mom and aunt makes them....but it's edible :-)

Thanks for the BR!
My chapathis are getting more rounder and don't look like the map of India anymore..LOL
I have a cook now...his isn't a perfect circle either. And I prefer my chapathis over his. As Dpk mentioned, it's all about practice and how the chapathi is and not the shape. I've seen triangular chapathis too.

hi dear friend, i loved to read that you like Indian chapati. i am an Indian and i make all the food at my place. i do not have any cooking person other than me to cook any thing. i love to make chapati and my family, and my in laws are chapati eating people. they like to eat chapati more and enjoy its taste more than rice. i am rice eater and they are chapati eaters. i make quite a variety of chapatis and stuffed and plain , sometimes a dough with spices and i have lots of varieties in making chapatis.

I make tortillas. They are basically the Mexican version of chapattis. I brought some to an Indian friend and she thought they were great chapatis. LOL I thought I made tortillas, but a name isn't important. She liked them and was happy.
The trick to making good ones is to first mix the oil or fat with the flour and a tiny bit of salt. Then put very hot water in and mix with a utensil. You have to guess at the amount of water. It's by sight. It can be adjusted by adding a bit more water or flour. Once it is cool enough to handle, then you can use your hands for mixing. Let them cool down. Then roll them out. Make sure the griddle is dry and hot before cooking them.

It's just practice to get them nice and round. Or you could buy a chapati/ tortilla press? Always perfectly round that way.
