Why so loud?

Why is it that some church services are so loud? I have known churches where the neighbors complain that their children can't sleep. The Bible says "be still and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10. Again in Isa: 30:15, we find the words, "in quietness and confidence shall be your strength". It seems to me that there should be more listening and less talking. I look forward to your comments.

I always thought they made it loud so that people couldn't fall asleep or talk to each other. But my experience is limited the church services I have attended were of the quieter unless they were singing. But I have on occasion gone to some of the looud ones also, it always amazed me that the people could talk to each other in normal voices once it was over.

Hi savypat, My experience has probably been much like your own. I recently heard of an elderly man who was a Roman Catholic and attended a Pentecostal service with his new wife. He actually became quiet scared and would never consider going back. Thanks for responding. Blessings.

In a church service, the minister or pastor should be preaching so all the congregation can hear him. If there are some outside and they can hear, it is because the minister wants his congregation who are hard of hearing to understand the sermon. When the congregation is singing, people can hear them possibly from outside. Otherwise when praying, the congregation shold be silent except for the minister praying. Loud enough but not excessive.
It also could be that the church's walls need better insulation. I hope that you are not talking from the point of view of someone who does not want to know or anyone know that there is a Christian worship service going on.

Hi suspenseful, Thanks for commenting and your response makes good sense. I have no problem with that. There are those who open church windows and are really loud as the testify and speak in tongues. I believe that we find God in the silence. Blessings.

I could not see going in a church and have everyone silent. or in whispers. I really love singing the hymns and the psalms. I also cannot see keeping the windows closed ihe late spring and summer and early fall when it is sweltering. I do think that this speakng in tongues is goobedlyg00k ( a colliqualism meaning nonsense). I went to a Pentacostal service once, and they were all jumping on the streets, saying Alleuia an speaking unintelligible words and they certainly not in Hebrew, the ancient language man talked before the Fall, or even some other foreign language. And these were all white people.

first of all we must have the experience of tongues to be worthy to talk about you. Like both of you I too do not have that experience. But both of you believe in the Bible. The bible says speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the holy spirit. I suspect some people might have misidentified the holy spirit. Some might have thought uttering unintelligible words coming in their mind while in prayer is speaking in tongues and may have uttered such words. Some might have been filled with an evil spirit that imitates like the holy spirit. But some might have spoken in tongues because of the gift of the holy spirit. Maybe you might have seen some people of the first two categories. That does not mean that the third category persons are not existing in the world today. Try to find them.

The way I remember it, about 65 years ago when I last attended church services, there were usually several male parishioners who fell asleep during the droning, somber, sermon.
At the same time, a few small kids took the opportunity to run wildly up and down the isles to the great embarrassment of their Mothers who dutifully tried their best to corral them as they galloped gaily by.
The Minister, besieged on one hand by the out of control kids, and on the other by the snoring members of his congregation, did his best to carry on by raising his voice to a fever pitch, intending, perhaps, to save their souls, even if it meant puncturing their ear drums.

Psalm 27:5-6 ....at His tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord."
Psalm 33:2-3 "Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy."
Psalm 81:1 "Sing for joy to God our strength; Shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the tambourine, play the melodious harp and lyre.
Psalm 98:4-5 "Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with the trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn...shout for joy before the Lord...the King."
..... and the list goes on.....

Hi rocket, I was waiting for someone to quote these scriptures or others like them but there are others that speak of quietness. Of course we cannot take the Bible literally or we would be doing some very crazy and terrible things. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.

Hi Pose, I believe that you are referring to the sound system. Some churches do install external extensions so that people who do not come inside the church for service can also hear.
I also do not like it and I consider it noise. Here in my home country, there are pastors who stand at a corner of a street and blast the Words of God on a megaphone. Irritating really. Yet there is no law that makes noise pollution a crime. Some pastors believe they could touch a soul or two with this method. So I let them be. Who knows that there is a really a soul in need who can benefit from this what we call noise.

Ji Pose: This same happends on my town. I respect all religions but I think that they can express their faith without making the neighbours feel uncomfortable. I think that's disrespectful. It's not on the noise we make, it's in our actions that people will find that we are Christians.

Hi starsailover, I agree, the Christian life must be lived and shouts of joys can be toned down or kept to oneself. It should be the same everywhere in church or outside. Christ said "by their fruits you shall know them". Thanks for your response. Blessings.

I often ask myself, why do human beings have to be so dang noisy?! Perhaps God may think this way about us from time to time too! I myself prefer a quiet service.

They are not like that in Canada. I think it's a uniquely American Phenominon. Doesn't make sense to me either.

I really hate noisy church or other religious places. i have an auntie who likes to hold church service in her home once every month. she invites a music band and guess what, they play music so hard and the people also sing very hard. i wonder why her neighbors do not protest. or maybe they protested, but she has more "power" in that neighborhood to ignore the protest.
in Indonesia, you can hold religious service at home with loud music, singings, sermons etc as long as your neighbors are okay. but the problem is: they do not realize that neighborhood is place to live where quiet environment is necessary. it's just inappropriate to hold religious service at home. don't do that please.
