Although System restore is a great tool on Windows 7, but after several strenuous efforts to restore my system to the original shape, and those constant online attack from those anonymous malicious websites, I just have to install Norton Anti - virus on my system to protect my daily operation. Before, I thought that should be not necessary, since I can use system restore. But lately, I just getting tired of it keep on restore my system. Why not set up a protective wall, and protect my daily operation here. Actually, this Norton Anti - virus is great and I can do a regular scan on my system and eliminate those risky files. I feel so safe right now, because whenever there is an attack occur, it will notify me and give me detail description where that attack originated.

I agree. Norton is memnory-hungry, can cause problems when installing perfectly innocent software and Avast is free, slimmer and works. However, if one has paid for Norton, then one may as well use it for the year.

Norton is very costly both in terms of money and system resources. It slowed down my PC and I went for AVG which is free. See this list if you want to consider some free antivirus programs as good as Norton

You definitely need an antivirus, anyone will give you even basic protection. It's always needed, mostly if your computer will have direct access to internet (that is, 99.99% of today PCs) to prevent anything. It's not a replace for system restore, because antiviruses prevent damage, while restoration repairs it once it already happen, also by destroying part of your most recent work too.
I personally don't like norton anymore. It has been once THE security suite, but now has been superseeded by many of its competitors. I now much prefer Kaspersky.

I prefer using McAfee. Norton is resource hungry and is notorious for slowing down the system. I hate Norton because it uses all resources to perform it's tasks first. Then it allocates resources for your own personal work. That is bad. McAfee is dormant. It will only use resources when you are not working and hence your system works faster for you.

You shouldn't actually need Norton with Windows 7.
Read these two articles:

I can thoroughly recommend Windows Secrets, by the way. A good newsletter which is free ... and even better if you 'subscribe' by paying whatever you feel is appropriate!

I used Norton for years but got tired of paying for the new edition yearly. I now use the Microsoft Security Essentials. It is a free download right online. It works just as good if not better.

Hi kingparker,
Prior to the one I am using one I too had Norton Anti virus program. There is no doubt that Norton is good compared to so many other anti virus but the only drawback is that it slows down the system.
Now I have been using Bit_Defender Internet Security. Not free version. This never slows down your computer. You can go on working even commanding the program to scan.
Next time you could try it.
