Since you're a newbie, why don't you start with fictions? That way you won't lose your interest in reading quickly...lol. No offense to anyone but non-fictions are kinda boring to most.
Next pick up a genre that you'll be interested in. Like crime, thriller, adventure, science fiction, romance, etc. Then look up on the net for suggestions in that genre. Check out the plot of those suggestions. If you like it, then read it and look for similar ones or just move on and explore other categories.
It'll take some time to figure out your interests. So good luck. Happy reading :)

To be honest,I have seldom read books or newspapers since I had computer.I mean printed matter. In fact ,reading online doesn't take the place of the book reading totally. The latter is easy for me to think ,taste and look up,what is more It is easy to carry about.

We must read as much as possible as there are lots of benefits of reading. The past, present and future can be known only through reading. If you don't read much you will become the past, the past in a sense that you will be outdated. We must bpdate by adopting a habit of constant reading. In simple sense reading will assist us to develop vocabulary and word power, comparatively high IQs, makes us quite expressive.

Oh, there are so many interesting books out there, what you need to do is to go to the nearest bookstore and immerse yourself into the atmosphere. Touch the books, read their titles or summaries at the back covers, or better still, go to the first page of the book and if you like how the author starts the story or article, then you can always choose to buy it.

Yea what you say is true. I remember having read the 'ode to nightingle' by John keats when i was so upset with my life; it gave me courage to face the hurdles of life and give a vision to direct my life away from where i was predestined. If you read "La belle dam sans merci" you will learn about the futility of being in love with a women with whom your love is not compatible. When you read more, you grow wiser, more conscientious, more dynamic, and kinder and most of all you get wider avenues to perfect your life. Most of us cover to succeed in life and that success can be achieved through building a habit of reading. I believe that reading should be made a part and parcel of your life especially at this time where your living demands lots of competitions.

Was there a book that you enjoyed when you were studying? You could try with that one. You will be surprised at what a second reading will do for you. You will see things in a different light, or maybe even see things that you hadn't seen before.
Start with something you know and build up from there. Who knows? you might even join a book club oneday and share your thoughts.

First you have to find out what subject is most interesting to you,and read somehing about it,that is a start. Then try to find books in that domain.May be you would like thrillers, suspense,or maybe history related,or romance, there are soooo many kinds out there, just find the one that attracts you the most and start! You will surprise yourself when you get caught in an interesting story, and you can't wait to get to your book again! Enjoy!

Hi, Shaileshrm,
It is good that you finally get interested in reading. I have been reading since I learned how to read. I remembered my mother encouraging me to read every night before I sleep. Thus, reading became a habit for me. I suggest that you begin reading something that interests you. But since you asked for suggestion, I highly recommend, "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom.
I hope you'll like reading as much as I do.

hi shaileshrm.. Thats nice to hear that you are interested in reading. I started reading as my hobby at the age of 7 i guess. I read first those parables and stuffs. When i was in my teen years, im into mystery books like nancy drew and hardy boys. Not to mention the all teen well loved series Archie comics and Sweet Valley. Before i turned 20, i started my very thick book. The first one i read was Wind mills of the Gods by Sidney Sheldon. I fall in love with Sideney Sheldons writing after that. I read almost all his collections. I am into John Grisham as well. I got hooked last year to Paulo Coelho. I hope my experience helps on how your reading will evolve. Happy reading then!

I think you should start reading a book that interest you. It will just bore you if you read a book that does not interest you. Thus, it will only be useless. I suggest that you write your interest first then repost your question for suggestion by indicating your interest :) Happy myloting!

it depends entirely on you and what genre you like personally i prefer crime fiction and thrillers. you may want to start reading fiction purely because it is imaginATIVE and more fun. Fiction is too boring and long. Jack Reacher series by LEe Child is awesome and the Dan Brown series.

I can describe you my own personal experience on how i developed the habit of reading.when i was a teenager like 13 or 14 years of age, I read the adventure series by Enid Blyton. then as you know there is huge burden of studies I was unable to read anything extra till I was in college.
then at around 18 I again started reading books and I started it from the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and after that I read books whenever I am traveling, free or not having any other thing. I hope you can start from the alchemist too.

"The man who does not read good books has not advantage over the man who can't read them". Mark Twain.
More than a decade ago, I remember myself having glued at one of the crannies of the dark room covering my face with a book. Under the dim flickering candlelight, words simply dance, which did not make much sense. During those days many people took reading as a primary leisure activity and some even adopted as hobby though they had some many setbacks against it.
Reading is the cornerstone for building a better person and it offers a productive approach to improving our thinking and widening our horizon. When you read, you forget yourself as you get lifted to lands far away in your minds created by the world depicted by the writers. You get clear picture of the past and give you the choice to learn from their mistakes and cultivate the successful paths they have followed. It provides you a resort for escaping from your worldly suffering and creates your own world with diversity of characters, scenes and challenging plots and of course some perfect resolutions. It heals your loneliness and injects joy to compensate your shortcomings.

I suggest go to a library. Browse the shelves and pick a book that seems to interest you. I do not just read a book just because someone tells me it is good. I read it because I think it is interesting.

I agree with the others. I think you should really ask yourself what do you enjoy the most. There are lots of books out there and our likes differ. For easy reading, you might try to read short stories first. I am sure that there are available books in the library which are compilations of short stories.

First, think about what you're interested in. There are books on practically every subject in the world. Books are a matter of personal taste. Sometimes, a really good writer can get me interested in a story or book even if I don't normally care about the subject. But, for someone who is just getting started in reading as a hobby, I'd say go with something you have a good chance of enjoying. You can browse in bookstores or the library and read descriptions, as others have suggested. Or, you also go online. Amazon.com gives descriptions of all the books they carry and you can do searches by subject and keyword. And look at reviews to see what other people say.
