Jason West of Vernal, Utah paid his deputed medical bill of $25 with 25000 pennies. He may be fined $140. Reason -- he has disrupted the work in the hospital and the coins were spread out on the counter.

Ok. This man was having so much pennies with him all these days? Interesting. yes. in many US houses if you check the drawer/table u will find a lot of pennies.
In this age of credit card/debit card/online buying from where he could have got this much pennies? U also keep pennies. get rid of them by exchanging.
have a good day.

Hi ravisivan
Pennies is still money and lots of them amount to greater amounts. I am surprised he is being fined. I can understand it being difficult to accept them in this type of line of business but fine him seems a bit much.
Personally I would have cashed them in as their are coin cashing machines all over the place here. But there is a fee for cashing them. As a matter of fact, my boyfriend never uses coins no matter what the total is. He comes home daily and empties all his coins into a pouch. 2 -3 times a year we cash them in and sums usually to 200 - 300 dollars worth, which comes in handy.

I don't see why the man should be fined for that,as long as he pays he can do it in whatever way he wants.Anyway,I guess he wanted to say something by this,I suppose it was a form of protest, because I saw on TV that in my country people went to gas stations and paid in the same manner as a protest against the continuous rise of gas price, and nobody fined them.

I can't believe that they want to fine him for this. He paid his bill and if he had that many pennies then why not pay it like that. I think that he was trying to prove a point as well. I believe that these could be pennies that he was saving or pennies that he had found. I pick up any penny that I see on the ground.

Funny story, I guess he wanted to make a point of some kind. But I think it's crazy that he would get fined for that. I hope he doesn't have to pay the fine!

He was not convinced of the bill on him for $ 25. That is why he did like that. But that caused disturbance and people in power have managed to fine him. He may have to pay but he is becoming famous for wrong reasons. have a very good day.

Ravi, I stay at Mumbai, India. I decided to withdraw Rs 500,000/- from my current account as I had some business formalities to be fulfilled. I went to the bank with a small bag in hand expecting to get paid in Rs. 1000/- or Rs 500/- or at least Rs. 100/- notes. Imagine how shocked I was when the teller at the counter informed me that I had to get currency to the value of Rs. 10000/- in Rs. 10/- denomination and Rs. 10000/- in the form of coins of Rs 5/-. I was shocked. The volume of the money made me feel like I was a millionaire. How the hell am I supposed to pay all those who I have to pay, in coins, or Rs 10/- notes? It happens. Can't help such things.

I do not blame the man for paying in pennies. Doctor bills are too high. I hope he pays his fine in pennies and that is what I was thinking when I read the article. I do not keep pennies. I never liked them. When I was young I would sling them across parking lots as well as nickels and dimes as an adult I will generally leave the pennies in the penny cup in the stores.

First of all, he would only need 2500 pennies, (not 25,000) to make up 25 U.S. dollars. 25,000 pennies is 250 USD. I know it's just a "typo", but... Or, maybe the bill was $250?
Actually, 2500 pennies would weigh just under 14 pounds, whereas 25,000 would weigh almost 138 pounds! It wouldn't be too difficult to carry 2500, but 25,000 would require two people or a wagon!
Interesting concept; paying with pennies. It should be legal enough, but I can somewhat understand the hospital's frustration. He should not have been fined, in my opinion...unless there are other circumstances involved.

It's not unheard of to pay a debt with pennies when you are upset that you owed the debt in first place. My uncle had paid a frivilious tax to city hall in pennies it didn't even stun the clerk who accepted the money.
You can actually request pennies from your bank in a larger quanity and they can order them for you no matter the reason. I gave my hubby $30 in pennies for his 30th birthday.
I don't think the story was very complete as to stating why other than it not being the norm to pay with pennies and dump them everywhere. I think if he would of given them a bag with the pennies and politely dropped it on the counter to make his payment perhaps all would of been fine? Now if he was swearing up a storm and throwing the pennies everywhere and causing a horriable scene perhaps call security.

I think it is strange that he got a fine for that. I don't think that would have happened in my country, but they might have refused to accept the payment in pennies. We have a rule about coins and shopkeepers etc only have to accept 25 coins of each kind. We have six kinds of coins: 50 oere, 1 krone, 2 kroner, 5 kroner, 10 kroner and 20 kroner, and maximum payment in coins that a person has to accept is 150 coins. The shopkeepers etc can accept more coins if they want to, but they don't have to. If someone showed up with 250000 coins and spread them out on the counter they might get told that it wasn't acceptable and get asked to remove them, but I don't think that they would get a fine.

Wow paying 25 dollars in pennies well it is money, but to do all that I guess he wanted to show that you know pennies our money too, but I can see how it is disrupting the hospital because they have to get to more patients, but instead they had to be counting the pennies right there. It is weird I knew I would one day hear a story like this.

I did not understand why the man was fined either. I have also done something similar. I could not make a doctor's appointment and they fined me twenty dollars for not going. I am on Medicaid and to me, it is not fair to charge someone that they already know does not have the money. I sent them a check for five dollars for four months even though I could easily have paid it at once. The point is that I should not have had to pay it at all. In the memo, I wrote something like payment on bill so I can not be sent to a bill collector :)

Hmm... well, I don't really see anything wrong with having so many pennies. =P When you find yourself short on money, every cent counts! =P
Hehe. Maybe he had a old piggy bank at home and got it from there! =P
In any case, the problem with what he did was that he didn't even make any effort to make things easier for people. Stowyk is right, he should at least have wrapped it in rolls and that would make it easier to count. Or he could have exchanged them first in the bank before using it to pay for anything.

That's an interesting story. I don't think that the man should have been fined for paying in pennies. Pennies are still money and if the hospital doesn't want to accept the money because it would disrupt the work of the employees, then they should just not accept the money. I'm hoping the man isn't doing it just to annoy the hospital.
