When your baby has colds, what do you do?

Aside from medication, what do you do to make your baby (1-6 months) comfortable when he/she has colds?
I'm currently babysitting my niece and she has a cold. She's two months old. She's currently taking medications but I'm concerned about her comfort. It's very humid here in the Philippines so she sweats easily. Any comments?

Is her medication been prescribed by her pedia? It is not safe giving medications to infants unless supervised by her pediatrician. I remember when my son was an infant, his pedia prescribed a saline nose drop to loosen a stuffy nose to allow easier breathing.
Make sure your niece is getting plenty of liquids and rest while she is sick. It will help her body fight off the illness and shorten its duration.
Elevate his head and chest by adding a pillow under her mattress. This would drain the congestion and ease coughing. Just be careful that you don't put the pillow on top of the mattress as this may cause suffocation.
You can try steaming. Put some hot water on a basin and add a few drops of euacalyptus oil or vaporub. Hold the baby but don't directly expose the baby to hot water. Steaming is the easiest way to relieve congestion but must be done with utmost care.
Hope your niece feel better soon!

Yes, the medication I gave her is prescribed by her pediatrician. Elevating the head really helped her sleep. She's feeling a bit better now but I'm still worried because the pediatrician told us that she has high risk to be asthmatic. I am asthmatic and I know that colds can somewhat trigger asthma. Thanks for the info! :) I'll try the steaming thing tomorrow. :)

Glad to hear she is feeling better now.
Thanks for the BR.
Asthma can be genetically inherited.
Do watch out for things that would trigger it.
It is so kind and nice of you to take care of your niece.

I used to rub vicks vaporub on my chest while feeding my baby so that she inhales it through breathing or rub it on her pillow so that her skin doesn't get irritated and she finds relief in breathing but your baby is too small do contact doctor and ask for some nasal drops. Its not nice trying to medicate yourself such a small baby. keep her warm too.

I usually for my kids make sure they have lots of fluids like pedialyte or something with a lot of electrolytes. Do not give the baby milk it will make her more congested. To keep her cool dress her in something light like a onesie or for my kids i just keep them in a diaper. Just make sure she drinks if she is not eating like juice watered down. But the best thing is to ask the doctor what can be done for her. Hope she gets better

Yes I think it may be too hot everywhere right now . Yesterday it hit 100 degrees and they sent my boyfriend home from work so he did not get heat exhaustion! Sucks for the pay but glad for his health! It's hard when babies get sick in the heat. They could actually be getting sick from the weather and people get agitated when its hot and they are not sick. Can you only imagine what that little baby is going through being sick in this stuff.

Thanks for responding! :) Yeah, I changed her into a onesie too and that made her less agitated. Guess it's just too hot here in my side of the world. :)
