Notification from Mylot

I have been inactive for a few days now because mylot has been sending me notifications that my discussions are game or poll type. The first one is asking the mcdonalds fan their favorite meal and the other about makeup. As it's really hard for me to come up with discussions, I hit a road block whenever I login here and I don't know what to ask. And I'm afraid that if I post something, I might violate again. Can you share to me how you come up with a discussion? that hopefully I won't violate anything in the terms. Have mylot been sending you the same notifications? What do you do to keep in mind all the terms that mylot has specified? Thanks in advance for sharing.

The answer is to read the Guidelines over and over until you understand them and know them by heart. Nearly all the "don't"s deal with topics which don't lend themselves to QUALITY responses. When you are thinking of a topic to discuss, imagine putting the same topic to a group of friends or answering the topic yourself. Is it something to which people HAVE to answer in more than just a few words? And, if so, would you have anything of substance to reply to any responses you get? Some people here are inventive and can type a paragraph or two on the most trite subjects but, as a rule, questions like "Are you a Mcdonald's fan? Share your favorite meal" don't really encourage good quality responses. Any question which COULD reasonably be answered by "Yes" or "No" or in just a few words is likely to be a "poll type" or "quiz type" question. (The example I gave above could be completely and satisfactorily answered by "Yes. Big Mac with Double Cheese"!)

As another user suggested, you don't have to start topics to earn here. Indeed if you do start them and then don't comment on the responses you will not be earning. Those who post the responses earn for them, not you. You can earn by commenting on the responses and furthering the topic. Why not spend some time just responding and ocmenting on those started by others so that yousee what 'discussion' requires as a topic. Just asking a question is not enough.

Great point, Mysdianait. Responding back to those that respond is important. It's what makes it a discussion.

Even if as an old user in Mylot, sometimes I will also make the mistake and my discussions will be deleted by Mylot admin. Sometimes I think it is wrong to delete it. This is very discouraging. So I have to be very careful not to make the same mistake again. I love China

Hi there Luz, Welcome to Mylot. Don't be intimidated by the notifications. We've all been there and done that when we first started out. Asking what your favorite anything is is really a poll type question because it leaves pretty much to discuss. You give your answer and that's it. I would probably answer with " I don't like McDonalds and tell you why which would open it up to a discussion somewhat but probably not enough to save it. So first of all, go in and read the FAQs and guidelines. When I first started, I really didn't know what to do so I just spent some time reading and responding to discussions from people who had been here a while. It really helped give me a feel of how this place worked. I still don't make discussions easily. I tend to respond more to other discussions rather than start discussions. Still, things happen in my life and it really does help to talk about it on here. I've gotten some amazing advice. It's a great place and I hope you don't get discouraged and give up. The fact that you are concerned tells me that you will do just fine here.

Wow at least you got some messages. I started two discussions today not realizing that they were poll type and then they were deleted without a reason as to why. It was then I went into the discussion guidelines and found out for myself that my questions where short answer type and that is not allowed. Now I just try to think of some questions that would put some thought into it like an experience someone may have had about a certain subject.

I have not seen yours, but I fall often in them : it is not always easy to see that a discussion is a "poll type" discussion.

I simply ask a question. If it gets deleted I try to reword it. It's their choice to limit what I say, not mine. Any question can be answered and debated so I really despise the limited view MyLot is taking toward our questions. If they only want a place where people can come for answers, they'd be Yahoo Answers. Now if they want to really let people say their "lot", then they should allow the questions that encourage discussion. Games, like "How high can we count if I start at 1?" are stupid and rightfully deleted. But how is asking someone their favorite something a bad idea. It definitely encourages discussion and enlightens others to new ideas. This falls under their limitation on "polls", but technically any question can be a poll unless you limit it to ones that offer all possible alternatives (which I think would be fair to limit). For instance, "yes/no" questions are out as are multiple choice, but any open-ended question should be fine. Discouraging us from discussing our favorite things is just going to push us to another website. Viva la revolucion! Le revolucion de inteligencia!

Sorry I didn't proofread that last line. Should be "La" not "Le". And that brings up another point: Why can't we edit our posts after they post? No matter how many times we proofread something, we can make mistakes that our brain was just not catching in that moment.

I respond to discussions more than I post questions. I feel more comfortable posting responses. I have written some questions, but mostly ones abouta asking advice about crafts to do that do not cost much and about my favorite soap opera. It is important to ask questions that people can answer or help give you advice. THose are the type of discussions people want to participate in.

Hello Luz, Don't be discouraged : everybody is caught one day or another in a poll type discussion. Ms Hatley started a good discussion a few months ago about them, asking myLot to add some examples. Read it and you will see that you are not alone : http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2475332.aspx Read the "Don't" in the guidelines when you have the idea of a discussion, and check if you don't find a similar one with the search box -- you can also win a reward with this box --. If it has not been treated like you want, just start it. You are not the first member to have made an error when starting a discussion : it is human, so don't be ashamed of your errors, and don't be afraid to start another discussion. Have a nice day.

Never make discussions about favorite foods or how many browsers, fruits, shoes or whatever things you have.. my discussions got deleted because of that. If you find it hard to make discussion, then answer some- maybe you'll get ideas from them.

Yup, I have receiving notifications as well. I uses to post discussions such as "what is the best.." or "what is your favorite...". I tried to avoid those kind of discussion and so far, the notifications I have been receiving is from a discussion from my friends that was deleted.

Hi luz I am sorry to hear that you have been a bit disappointed, I too felt this way early in my membership here. It was when I began to really recognize the guidelines that I realized what I was doing in error of the guidelines. What I found helpful for me is that when I received a notification, and read the discussion over a few times, simultaneously with the guidelines in another tab. It was then I began to realize what was wrong. I realize some notification do not state the reason because sometimes the deletions is not something because of your doing but rather that the discussion itself and or perhaps a response that you may have commented to was a violation. It was then, again that I would read the actual discussion and or response together with the guideline link and it became clearer where as I can instantly see when something is going a violation. I hope this helps a bit and you decide to return back to myLot as it is really a great community.

If you are not comfortable yet coming up with discussions or are afraid that they might violate some guidelines or something like that, you can still participate here in myLot. =) Just respond to the discussions already here, there are a lot! =P Feel free to respond to even the old ones. That way you can also be exposed to the discussions and eventually you will be able to think of a good topic to start. =) To answer your questions, I have received notices before about a few of my responses being deleted because the topic was removed. Happily, the few discussions that I have started myself were not deleted. =) I just look into/review the guidelines when I start a discussion to make sure I avoid those things not allowed. Welcome to myLot and have a nice day! =)

May be you can think it in this way. If you are afraid of receiving notification of mylot, and can't think of anything worthy to ask, then why don't you try to answer the questions posted by others? Sometimes may be the questions we asked are really not worthy discussion! We may not a pro and so we may not be able to identify the problems in our questions! Try to make use of your knowledge, and helps others who are facing different obstacles in their life. This would also give you chances to participate in the discussion and to interact with other mylotters! Don't feel that you are being isolated, I am sure you will feel a lot better after following my little opinion. ^_^ cheers!

Yes some months before I had also faced this problems because they give me a reason for deleting for my discussions and responses that my discussion was game type or pool types. So I was also very upset. But now I have no any notifications received because now I have understands that which discussions I should started and which not. So now it is helped me for giving quality in my discussions. And I also want to suggest you always starting those types of discussions who are not relates to mylot means who are already cleared in their guidelines and also you shouldn’t started any discussions who are game or pool types and also avoid related to violence topics.
