I have bought coolers and checked to make sure my fans are running properly but i hate that i have to hold my laptop at an angle so that it doesnt overheat it just makes me angry. do you have any ideas about why my HP G71 might be failing epically in this categorie it was a black friday knock off but its still a good little laptop i think. My laptop just has some issues.
i think i might buy a new one if this thing doesnt stop because it gets so hot that it gets to the point where the laptop gets laggy and the mouse moves in jumps and at this point i just shut it off also it has 4gb or ram so i dont think i need to put more in it haha
pls post your thoughts and thanks in advance :)

"Laptop" has always been a misnomer. Laptops very often have the main cooling grille on the underside and they should always be used on a hard, flat surface and never on a lap, bed or other soft surface liable to obstruct the airflow.
Some laptops run hotter than others and I have heard that HPs can get very hot - certainly too hot to have on one's lap!
If the room you work in is, itself, rather warm, this will naturally make it more difficult for the laptop to cool itself. You can buy a platform with built-in fans which will help to draw more air through the machine and, additionally, angles the keyboard to a better typing position.

Yea i always have my laptop at an angle it just gives it better air flow i think. i would like to get a decent laptop cooler that actually works though all the onnes i have used are really crappy and they stop working after the cord gets bent that connects the usb to the cooler but o well ill buy me a mac for college and then it will never over heat!

really? It happens in HP too? My laptop is a Dell and it has a reputation of overheating, in some instances, they even said these laptops can explode. I'm in a tropical country so it's always hot everywhere and my laptop overheating is not uncommon. So, I make it a point to use a laptop cooler or whenever I use my laptop, I turn the airconditioning on to avoid overheating. My laptop also has a feature that whenever it is dangerously hot, it will automatically turn off. You might want to check if that feature is available in your laptop too.

I am kinda scared now that you said some explode! lol i hope my HP doesnt hate me enough to do that im pretty good to her. but yea the stupid thing is like really bad on overheating and idk i think its probably because i play video games that exceed the processor by like .1 ghz lol but as long as i dont play for a long time its alright because people overclock there processors and stuff all the time so i dont know why there would be a problem

What I do is to keep several cooler bag blocks in the freezer. Once frozen they will not thaw for several hours.
I then pop one into a sealed plastic bag(to prevent any excess water spilling on my desk) and place it under and to the rear of my computer. Not only is the laptop slightly tilted to allow freeflow of air, but the ice block will cool the air as it passes through.
It works for me

I found my laptop was getting hot and sometimes cut out. I use it a lot in bed so the bed cover was blocking the airflow of the fans. I have now put it on a wooden tray which allows air to circulate and it has been working fine ever since so it is worth a try.
I have also seen you can buy similar things with built in fans which might help.

Make sure that it is clean where the air flow vents out! I have a Toshiba that becomes too hot to touch sometimes. I usually stick a fan, just a normal room fan, right in front of it and that will cool it off quickly.

I have this issue as well I just place the laptop where the fans are on the edge of my table so that the aur canflow easily out and not to the base of the laptop and heat up the whole system and can cause random shut downs.

Oh, my lenovo netbook also have the overheat problem which I cannot hold it on my lap. Are your coolers not strong enough? I have bought a small table to solve the problem. The small table is installed with two big coolers. I can use it as a board or a table placing the netbook on top of it and cooling it down at the same time. It did help a lot as I don't have to put the netbook directly on top of my lap (I am afraid that the overheat problem may make it explode = =) and sometimes I place the small table on top of my bed and finish some paper word rather easily. It costs me around $25 US dollars (not really expensive I think) and used it for two years (the coolers can still function well, but the leg of the table was broken because I was too careless). You can try to search that on ebay maybe to see if the table is available (because I bought it from local seller). I hope it helps!
