In my own experience, i find it useful. I've been to different parts of Europe where some countries have very difficult languages. Im thankful that in my own country ENGLISH is the common mode of teaching from pre-school to upper level of education. Its quite a big plus for me when i started to live here in Europe. Its convenient and very helpful in my survival and adaptation to the new environment. Though right now i am studying the country's language in order to fit in and find a job that is related to the degree i graduated from my own country. Besides its one of the requirements before i can proceed to my bachelor program i will be studying for the coming semester.
happy mylotting everyone!!

yeah, i agree with you about English is useful everywhere. My English is not very good, but I'm using myLot. This is the way I learn English, beside the time I use to listen to English with my computer, and my iPod.

hi!
english is very useful especially when travelling to different countries. unfortunately it is not a language shared by many locals (where english is not even the 2nd or 3rd language) unless it's the younger generation. it is still best and more convenient to learn the local tongue. adapting to a foreign environment is communicating in the local language, if you plan to stay for long periods.
but i'm really grateful that english was taught in school. it helped me ease in when i worked in international projects and traveled in other countries.
wow, europe. that must be exciting. goodluck there!

having loads of english words while on travel is certainly useful, but it certainly help packing a handful of useful words in the local language or dialect enough to get you by on greeting, buying and asking for directions. locals are more appreciative that way, seeing a foreigner adapting to the local culture and language.
if everyone will speak a common language, that would be neat. not forsaking each country's culture of course.

English has become to be a global language. Many countries set the English as the first foreign language. So when you travel around, you will see that many people can speak in English. And as a foreign language, English is not so difficult as other languages.
I love China

Dear friend,
English as for many in Asia is best one to communicate especially while traveling. I wished I could learn Spanish and French which also best to use in Western countries. Moreover this use of language really helps to reduce the gap in communication. I hope this would be known by every citizen of every country. May be as part of global language.I feel it is also easy to learn.

I have a friend who doesn't speak English and it is very hard for him to travel on his own, because he isn't able to buy train tickets, make hotel reservations, order food in a restaurant, ask for directions etc. He always takes a group to avoid the language problems. I understand that, because I think it is hard to travel on your own if you don't speak English.
Sometimes the locals don't speak English and you can't avoid language problems completely "just" because you speak English, but it is still a big help. I have been in some situations where the staff didn't speak English at all, but I got help from other tourists who spoke English as well as the local language. Without English I wouldn't have been able to explain the situation and they wouldn't have been able to help me.

I agree porcospino.. That a smart move of your friend to be in group when traveling. Though there are lot of places where most locals do not speak english. Just like when i went to french riviera, where locals especially the old generations do not bother to answer you in english. Well, french are so known of being snob but food there are superb.

It is even useful in your own country. Thanks to the internet and some manuals. If I just imagine how many things I would have missed if I hadn't learn english (I'm still learning so don't be angry if you find some mistakes in my posts :D) and how often I would have paid someone to fix my computer problems then... but back to the topic:
when you travel its very nice to speak english and have some english speaking people around. You can "talk" ;) with people who couldn't understand you otherwise. I remember a really funny group I met in Denmark a few years ago we were a japanese, a englishmen, two italians and two germans and we had some really cool days together just because everybody was able to speak english (more or less)

I guess it's safe to say that English is the universal language. It's very useful for me because I know almost all countries are trained to speak english.
When I had a one month visit to UAE, I thought they all speak Arabic but I was so surprised they all speak fluent english. Made me inspire that I should study how to speak English very well, too.

Yeah, since it's an International language, if you want to travel to other country that didn't speak your language, then you need a language that someone else can speak of. Though I must say, it's better to learn a bit of native language of the place. In no one understand English, then you might end up with hand gestures and body languages.

Yes. English is very useful when travel to various countries. However the accent may be slightly different in different place. What is the language in your country. Do u have degree classes also in the same language? have a good day.

In my point of view yes it's very helpful that's why its called as the "Universal Language" because it connects the world under one tongue that majority of people are fond of.
