One of my friends is a very health conscious person. She makes sure that her body remains slim by following the after 6PM diet (which suggests not to take as much carbohydrates after 6PM since you'll be heading to sleep so you won't be needing stockpile of energy sources since your body would be at rest for 5 to 8 hours).
Aside from that, she always make it a point that part of her monthly budget would be spent for branded vitamin supplements. I asked her if how does a capsule of branded vitamin C cost and I was surprised that a capsule of this branded vitamin C costs about half a dollar!
I asked her: "Don't you think its wiser to buy fresh fruits or vegetables as your vitamin C source rather than those expensive branded vitamin C considering that you only don't get the Vitamins you need but you also get those fibers that would aid in your digestion and cleanse your intestines?"
She told me that the brand of Vitamin C she's taking is still far better than fruits and vegetables because it is pure vitamin C and that she gets the required amount of vitamin she needs.
I still would like to reason out but since it has been years of her daily regimen, I just decided to be silent and respect her belief.
Do you think she's correct? I know we need vitamin C in our body but do we really need to have it is a regular dosage? Aren't the vitamins in fruits and vegetables enough for our recommended dietary allowance?

Welcome to Mylot Itsack!
Hmmm... Ive heard somewhere that the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables are not as potent like they used to. For instance, the VitaminC in an orange today is 10% lesser that the VitC of the past year, or something to that effect. Furthermore, the potency of the vitamin Cs of each type of vitaminC tablets in the market vary. Are you surprised with this? Take for instance, the 500mg of FernC is 10x powerful than the 500mg Rhea VitC.
I do understand your practicality here that whats the use of taking supplements if you can get them naturally, am i right? It would be good if we can eat fruits all the days of our lives, but this doesnt happen to most people thats why they end up taking supplements. As for the veggies, their nutritional value decreases upon cooking, so i guess it would be nice to take supplements for minerals and vitamins that we are supposed to obtain from veggies.
Uh.. Which reminds me, i should start taking my VitaminCs tomorrow hayyyyy

The main point of taking intake supplements Vitamin C is not about the purity. Sometimes we do not actually follow the recommended dietary allowance strictly. I might go to Mcdonalds for dinner which the food choices may provide me with nothing conerning vitamin C or else. So like your, I take Vitamin B,C and E pills everyday. They are actually not very expensive. (Compare your health with money, which one is more important?) And this ensure my body to have enough vitamin no matter what I eat on particular day.
And the fact is, I become healthier after I take those vitamin pills on daily basis. I usually get a cold or sore throat in the past very easily, say someone coughed in the same cabin of the train, I would definitely get infected by him. Now I seldom feel sick, it seems that my immune system become stronger than before. It is worthy for you to start taking vitamin as well. ^_^
