concept of e-gold - can any one help?

There are many payment processors out of which e-gold is the one of famous processors. But in case of other payment processors , it just holds our money, but in the case of e-gold it says that , our balance is backed up by the real gold. Actually how this concept works? If the gold rate increases, can we get more profits, for just having our money in e-gold?
