I saw one interesting thing: many atheists or agnostics do these things: the are non smokers and complete abstinents, they are vegetarians or vegans and sometimes anarchists. But i think atheist or gnostics really understands laws of nature. There is a myth that atheist or gnostics are unspiritual. I know some atheist who believes in reincarnation and karma.
What do you think about them.
I know some great atheists and gnostics:
Hemingway
Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt
Tolstoy (rusian wrirter)
Carl Sagan (greatest astronomer in the world ever)
and many more
Write what do you think?

hi esuturtingas,
good people belong to every group of faith. there are many good christians, muslims, buddhists, atheists, or agnostics. so, we cannot say a group of people are better than others or the best of others.
personally, i do not agree with atheists because they deny their Creator. it's like a child who does not respect and appreciate his parents.
anyway, everyone has the right to have different viewpoints about God. we have to respect other people's opinions to make a peaceful life:)

I do agree with you. We cannot compare one group to the other. Whether believer or non believer there is goodness in each person. There are atheists and skeptics who are living good lives but these people are not humble enough to admit that there is somebody who created this world. This is their biggest mistake: they do not recognize their creator. In fact There are many scientific explanation of the existence of a supreme being.

It is by no means clear that Tolstoy was an atheist more like a Christian Anarchist
You name a few famous people but what of the many who were religious? This shows nothing
The doctrine of karma and reincarnation is an evil one. That I should suffer or be rewarded for actions taken by a person who lived previously that in no real sense of the word was me, is the height of injustice. It is a means of the rich and powerful justifying their oppression of the poor and weak. it is the antithesis of spirituality.
Many of the greatest scientists have been believers

Well I can't say I agree with the non-smoking, abstinent thing, but studies have shown that atheists make up an extremely small portion of the prison population. I believe it is somewhere around 0.2%, whereas Christians (Catholics included), make up around three-fourths. Some argue that is because there are more Christians than atheists in the US, but that doesn't matter because it's measured by ratio.

In my entire life, i had met and see bad people from all walks of life, it has nothing to do with that person religion belief or no religion belief, i have no doubt you can find some of the best people in our world today are make up by atheist too.

I've never understood the concept of a spiritual atheist.
How can you believe in spirits, and yet claim you know there is no 'god'? If there are spirits, how do you know there isn't a 'god spirit'?
I also find that atheist anarchists, tend to lose their stated beliefs when someone breaks into their car and steals their radio, or runs off with their lover.
Yeah, when *they* have to follow the rules, there's no god or authority. But when someone ditches them, or takes their stuff, suddenly that's morally wrong, and a violation of the law.
I have a bit more respect for agnostics, because at least they admit they don't know.
As for 'great' atheists and agnostics... I suppose that depends on how you define 'great' doesn't it?

Dear freind,
I feel so at times, when I see who have those mentioned qualities. But I do know people who are atheist and who smokes heavily, have drinks and also non vegeterain. Hope it depends upon an individual outlook from those atheists or agnostics that individual have come across most. May be majority of it could be with better qualities.

Indeed there are good atheists but that does not mean Atheists are the best people. Because if good living is the basis then the number of good atheists can be surpassed by the unaccountable big number of believers who also live a good life. Those people you mentioned happened to be just popular but how about those not popular and living a very bad life, do you know them? So it really hard to generalize.
But what really matters is not whether who are the best people for in reality no one can really be called the best. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. There is none righteous no not one so we all need Jesus lest we all go to hell.

There are good and bad people of any belief. Often nonreligious persons think about these types of things more. That is often how they become to be nonreligious is by deeply exploring religion, spirituality, and morality. However, I do not believe that it is fair to say that they are better.
You are right that there is a myth that nonbelievers are not spiritual. As an evolutionist with no God I can attest to the fact that it is a myth. I happen to be very spiritual myself. I do not consider myself an atheist though, since the term has been warped into something which I am not.
On a side note, I LOVE Sagan!!! He is most certainly the greatest astronomer ever!

I don´t think that atheists or agnostics are very different from the rest of the population. And it is naive to place in the same list someone like Hemingway or Toltoi with Brad Pitt.
To check if what you say is true, you would have to start with a Gauss curve and stadistics instead of using your agnostic or atheist neighbor as the one example.
I am agnostic, seetking spirituality all my life, an ol´witch many times, I love a juicy steak, but try to use leftovers instead of throwing them. I smoked heavily for 50 years and left it because it was too expensive. Am I a model? No, I´m a person. Someone that happens to be agnostic among a lot of other things. Please don´t try to create yet another mith. All people are as good as the others and deserve the same respect.

A good attempt to put forward an analysis about atheists. Though I am not great like the people in your list, I am staunch atheist. I do believe in karma not in the manner suggested by you. Karma, I take as one's duty. Reincarnation - is nothing but transformation of matter which is again a natural phenomenon. I do not say atheists are the best people, but atheism may bring down animosities based on religion.

if someone believes or not in god that doesnt mean that someone is good or bad. i know some people that believe that god exists and they are not good people. and some agnostics are good people too. i just think that people spiritual beliefs doesnt say if they are good or bad. what shows if they are good or not is the way they act. im happy that you admire those that are agnostic. we should always respect different
beliefs^^ i can say that those that believe in god but are always accusing people of being sinners or saying trash about people are bad. we shouldnt judge someone just bcs he doesnt believe in god. keep respecting agnostic and atheists^^ they are people like everybody just their beliefs are different. this is a nice discussion^^ thanks for creating it.

There are bad apples in every community. There are good ones too. It is up to us to respect each others opinions and views. If an Atheist is doing something bad in his or her life, then it is simply because that particular him or her is doing something which we don't believe in or rather something which we wouldn't do. Now in this case we are the one being judgmental about someone having a different approach. Atheists in my sense are people who don't go along with religions, but who believes in something supernatural. They are humans too who eat and drink and still has the same red blood in their veins.

Yes, many intelligent and kind people are Atheists, but there isn't really a larger group that Atheists belong to like Christianity or Hinduism. This makes it harder for the world to place labels like good or bad, on the group. For example, I can say that e Jehova's witnesses are a group I don't like (don't get mad, just choosing a group) and I love the Methodists. It's more difficult with atheists because the group is too large to judge by their association.
I am of the belief that there are good and bad people in the world. I'm not sure our religious values have anything to do with it!

In my opinion, like religiously motivated persons, I believe there are good and bad people in all walks of life. Just as we can identify good and bad people belonging to every religion in existence, I am sure one can identify the same with atheists or agnostics. I believe in respecting each individual for the manner in which he/she live their lives and not for their preferred or professed religion or lack thereof.
