How long you start blogging before start monetizing it?

I have heard people said almost impossible to start monetizing our blog from scratch..Monetizing program such as adsense will not approve our blog when register on it. SO we must develop our blog with lots of content and generate good traffic prior to register on those program. However for beginner it's quite hard to keep our self motivated and I'd rather directly earn through mylot than waiting approval..Do you have another opinion? How long normally you start blogging before start monetizing it? What kind of advertising program other than adsense if you can start from scratch?
