What in the world were they thinking?

Columbus Ohio has just opened their new courthouse. The cost of $105 million. That is quite a lot for a city that is claiming to be hurting. On top of that they put in a glass staircase. They are warning women to not take the new stairs as you can see straight to the top? Why would they do such a thing and who approved it? It is crazy!! You can read the article 0n 10tv, Columbus, Ohio.

I don't now anything about the cost of buildings in the USA but it does seem to me to be very extravagant and if I were a resident there then I would want to know who was the bright one who suggested a glass staircase? very frivolous in a time when most if the world is having economic problems? It just doesn't make sense to me. Total madness when people are hurting

hi cynthiann I think some archetect had a peeping tom problem who insisted on a glass staircase. Had to be some sore of nut then they suggest women do not use it.wow. talk about throwing money away.even here in the U S that is way too high for a city hall.I am sure that in Columbus there are many poor people who cannot get adequate health care and that money would have really helped them. Also people out of work could have been helped by the government using some of that money tol create good jobs

Hatley - things like this really get up my nose. Out here we have a road that the government is fixing which must be the most expensive road in the world. Also - they borrowed the money to do it. In our money it works out to 800 Million dollars fo 1 kilometer or a half of a mile Can you believe it? We have at this moment one of the most corrupt governments in the world. We have no unemployment benefits and this money could do so much to create jobs for people or for health care. I just hate t when they borrow without any means of paying back and use it for pork barrel politics. The general election is next year so this will be used to bribe the people to sell their votes I just pray to God that they will accept the money but vote for the other side

I heard that on the radio. They may tint the glass, meanwhile they have warned women to take the elevator if wearing a dress.

Personally the problem is most States never stop to think about a deficit, or putting the money to better use. They continue to do things like this instead of worrying about the schools, and the people out there loosing their homes, jobs, etc. and no one being able to help them. It gets a little crazy when they put a lot of limits on us, but still do crazy things like this.

You have to understand the purpose of a Public Building. They are built as a monument to someone or to remember them by. It is not only the politicians who build monuments to themselves but so do Architects. Just count the number of monstrous building that you wonder why. Some Architect is trying to make a name for him/her self. With this building the Glass Stairway may be his/her signature statement. Politicians and Architects like to think they build memorials but as one person said of the Viet Nam Memorial - The Architect designed the monument and the people made it a monument.

Idiots showing their true selves! Talking about obvious Government wasteful spending at it's best and worst! Go figure. As a matter of fact, don't figure because you'll never come to a good reasoning. Glass staircase? What is wrong with these people?! Spending money that they don't have. Yeah, try figuring this out....

That is just ridiculous. Why build something and then tell people not to use it? It shows lack of thinking and planning. Whoever thought of this? Is he an artist? Please do not misinterpret, I do not mean to offend artists. It's just that the only thing I can think of with regards to a glass staircase is if it's in some way related to art. Does Columbus, Ohio have an art gallery? Maybe they should transfer the gallery to this courthouse, and turn the gallery into the courthouse. That way at least, the money won't completely go to waste... I hope... Of course, as an art gallery, the staircase will still only be an exhibit, and not really a functional staircase. Or they can sell the building to Disney or something...

They are checking into having them tinted or something. Poor planning.

Ah I see. So they thought of a solution at least... although, it's another added expense...

I heard about this on the news but I wasn't really paying attention and didn't catch exactly where it was. I've heard of stupid design flaws before, but this is absolutely unreal! Did nobody think about women and young girls walking up and down the stairs in dresses and skirts? If I were a conspiracy theorist I'd think some pervert did it on purpose! Annie

They weren't thinking, it's not their job. That would have been planned and built under our last governor, "Taxin' Teddy" Strickland. He was known for the usual tax and spend philosophy of his party and had a lot of construction projects going. There was such a push for jobs that I doubt anyone looked very closely at anything. We're in the hole $8 billion because of his policies and debacles like this, sadly, don't surprise me.

hi thoroughrob Was some voyeur in on the plans forthe glass stair case. thats really quite sick to think people would want to look up out skirts or what have you. And the cost 105 million when the city probably needs better medical care for poor people and more jobs for those out of work. That money could have really helped the people that needed it the most instead of making a glass staircase instead. How utterly wasteful in this times of bad economy.

oh good greif. you just wonder these days why the government wastes on such things instead of renovating or redecorating what they have. or at least cutting costs instead of going for the best of everything.

It just goes to show you that there is no limit to the extent of stupidity and waste that you find in government. The really scary part is that these mental midgets are the ones running our country in all levels of government. It proves that the qualities it takes to get elected aren't necessarily the ones that it takes to effectively govern, or have an intelligent thought for that matter. Sometimes, what they do just defies explanation...

Hi Thoroughrob. Just shows the government knows how to waste what they don't have. Heck I read many years ago that in the white house a toilet seat cost over 400.00 and I just plain was upset about it. I mean you can get a pretty nice toilet seat for 10 bucks so why would it cost so much for the white house? And then to put a glass staircase in is just plain stupid! Wasting our tax dollars on something that grand what the fart was they thinking? We the voters should vote these kinds of wasteful people out of office. Let them stop making so much money and start using every dollar in a wise way. But this sort of thing is in the bible, man wanted a man king instead of having God as our leader. Then God warned them that the kings would take our sons to war, tax the stuff that belonged to us and take what they wanted. But man wanted a man king they could see and the man kings of this world is doing exactly what God said they would do. So as voters we need to get some fresh blood in offices that take things of this world more seriously and be responsible for things that should matter to all not to just those in office! Great post my friend!
