Obesity and weight loss surgery

I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) in February, 2011. Basically, the surgeon went in and removed 80%of my stomach, leaving me with a "sleeve" shaped stomach. I have lost 60 pounds since my surgery. I'm down to 166 pounds! I often wonder, though, if I could have done this without the sleeve. I follow a very strict diet now... Something I could never do before, for some unknown reason. Why am I able to do this diet now when I never could do this before?? Have any of you had weight loss surgery? How did you feel afterward??
