There are alot of sites that pay you to write for them. Associatedcontent.com,ehow.com,examiner.com,just to name a few. You can also write and publish your own book and earn money that way. I did and it's for sale here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004YLDX6O It's poetry, but you might like to view it-preview for free and write a review.

How are their publication costs or did you go through someone else? Lulu seemed a pretty good option to me, since it's free.

I don't think there are ANY sites that do up-front payments for Indians. There are very, very few that do up-front payments for anyone these days: they've been badly burned by junk writers and stopped offering cash in advance. That said, AC might still do it (Associated Content, which is now the Yahoo! Contributor Network or something equally horribly-named).
The place to find the best-paying sites I've seen is Deb Ng's blog, FreelanceWritingGigs.com - I haven't been there for a while but her policy was always to refuse to post anything that paid less than $50. It looks like that's changed: I just checked and there are items in today's job listing offering $15 per article and similar. They're still well-paid jobs.
She posts every day and is very forceful in her opinion that the bidding sites are destroying the writing market with slave labour wages (I disagree equally forcefully but we're still good friends - or at least polite acquaintances). Her blog is a great resource.
Personally, most of my clients have come (originally) from the bidding sites - mostly Elance, where I've done press release editing, blog entry production and ongoing massive amounts of article editing for a couple of US sites. All reasonably well-paid, though nothing astounding.
The worst-paying clients came from Freelancer, though that's not necessarily a reflection on the site. Those were $2 blog posts and that sort of thing.
I picked up my best individual client from oDesk - regular work, $15 an hour (which isn't great wages but when it's regular and flexible I'm not complaining). I'm learning a lot about another industry through that work, too, which will be a real bonus in the near future - investment time!
I've also picked up two clients through my blog's contact page (there's a bunch of useful info on that blog, too) - one to edit a book (on inventing things) for a lump sum, the other didn't work out (I was too expensive for him).
The most recent contacted me through Constant Content for 4 short ebooks (about 10 pages each) which should total about $500-$600.
As you can see, it's not so much WHERE you work but how well you provide quality work for customers. Once you start to build up a reputation, you'll get better jobs. It took me a while - I've been doing this for about 3 years now - but my first 'proper' jobs came in after a few months.
Before that, I was doing the same as most people: writing on Helium, AC, HubPages and so on. It's all good practice and makes you more visible. Some folks have the courage (and ego) to jump in and try for the $100-per-article jobs but I have a more realistic (or pessimistic) view of my skills!
Hope it helps.

Oh! I just remembered: Reader's Digest is almost always looking for reader stories in a particular genre (gardening, family or whatever they're doing in the coming months) - and they pay REALLY well if they use your story. Off the top of my head, I think the last one I saw was £150 a shot!
