Another issue to be tackled in the Philippines the only country outside the Vatican that bans divorce.
The House of Representatives began debating a bill to legalize setting aside the hot issue of RH Bill.
The bill proposes five grounds for the filing of a petition for divorce which include psychological incapacity, which is a common reasons for filing a legal separation or divorce. It is when partner’s failure to comply with essential marital obligations.
Other grounds for filing a divorce is only couples who have been separated for five years and those already legally separated for two years are the only ones who may apply for divorce. It should be irreconcilable differences causing the irreparable breakdown of the marriage.
The Social Weather Station ask the adult Filipino and half of them responded that estranged couple who are living apart should be allowed to divorce so they can marry again legally. Third part of the respondent disagreed the bill and the rest are undecided.
The Catholic Church is again facing another attempt of blocking the said proposed bill. Now, the people are waiting for the President on his stand for the divorce law.

Well, I am against divorce and I strongly disagree for it. The five grounds for divorce is very simple and this is not protecting the family. Because under our constitution. Family is the basic foundation of the nation...if the government failed to protect the family from any aggression which the family broken...therefore the government should stop to be regulate anything...

This bill may once again rattle the whole nation. Being brought up Cristian, I had high ideals about marriage. I think divorce is not the solution to the increasing infidelity issues but rather major focus must be poured over educating our people about the sanctity of marriage.
As observed in the US, people are easily taking for granted marriage vows. As such, marriage had been deduced to be just a "phase" and can easily be broken whenever the couple experience difficulties. This, I believe, would have a huge impact on our kids' well being and perception of commitment.
I may agree to divorce over the illegal relationship of unannulled people though.

The concept of Maria Clara had been dwindling ever since the imposition of western ideas in the Philippines. It is a sad fact because our ancestors had brought us to be modest and conservative. As such most western countries had admired us beause of it.

for me, i think it should be. instead of letting people go through the ordeal of dealing with their abusive partners.. they can get out of a bad situation that way. i mean, its not like if the bill is passed, everyone would go line up and file for a divorce... right? many things are to be considered, still by the people who are in the situation...
thanks!

Agree. Estranged couple should be given a chance to live their lives separately in a legal manner. Recent statistics shows that there are a lot of unannulled couple who are having "illegal" relationships with others. I think that having that situation is more "immoral", don't you think?

For me, it is a big no. People might abuse this law and more marriages will be broken and the kids will be left in anxiety. People should think twice before they will get married, everything has a solution, as an adult take extra precautions before marrying someone for you not to end in divorce.

One of the Advantages of Divorce to be legal:
Female Part:
if the male partner's pocket having no money to support girl for a living, the girl will soon apply a divorce to a male partner as...
"No Money, No Honey"
Male Part:
if the male noticed that their first night, the girl is not virgin, then it's the advantage of the male to file divorce immediately...
i am strongly against divorce...
but if still divorce is implemented,
then,
this is the Advantages of the Divorce to grab for....

The Philippines is not yet through with RH Bill, maybe Divorce Bill will be another headache for our lawmakers! But i am sure those congressmen and senators with more than 1 wife and those planning to get a younger wife will act with this hehehe in favor of themselves.

I think we're in for the long haul on this one. There are really pros and cons of enacting a law legalizing divorce. Personally, I'm old school Catholic and would not want such a bill passed into law. I feel that this being reactionary instead of being proactive. I mean, I believe the problem lies in those people getting married themselves. I don't think they really understand the essence of marriage. I don't know how it's gonna be done, but if we could find ways, both the church and our government, to drum in what marriage is, then maybe problematic marriages would be minimized. Legalizing divorce would only erode the essence of marriage. People would easily get married knowing that they could get a divorce anytime they want.

I think that divorce should be legalized in the Philippines.a lot of people are suffering unhappy, unfulfilled marriages.it's not that I don't value marriage.marriage is an agreement with God.most of the marriages that are unhappy are those between people who aren't truly compatible for the long-term.I think people should be given the chance to be happy in romance.to those planning to get married, just make sure that you can take the responsibilities and required commitment of marriage, for better or for worse.
