I recently got a new miniature schnauzer puppy named Toby. I absolutly love him to death but he seems to have a bit of a biting problem. He doesnt do it to be mean and I understand that this is normal puppy behavior but I was wondering if you guys have any ideas on how to get him to stop. If you have any advice that doesnt involve hurting him when he bites (since I think this is inhumane) I would greatly appreciate it. :)

I don't know for sure how to stop this problem, but I had always heard that if you hold down the tongue it would get the point across. I don't know if that would be considered inhumane, but I think if you don't push the tongue into the teeth that it wouldn't actually hurt the puppy. I haven't heard of any other methods. Would it be possible to get some kind of toy to put into the puppy's mouth when he starts biting? Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I haven't had a puppy around in almost 20 years (when my nephew was a baby). Good luck with that!

Well, I also have a dog, a Cocker Spaniel, and he also has a biting habit especially when someone just got home. I think it's a play thing for them and they have no idea they're already hurting us. I don't have any solid solution to this one except throw his toy away so he would go and fetch it back because then, his attention will be diverted to his toy.

Biting is common and when that happens you could give it a toy bone to chew on. This will go on for some time and the only way you can control it is to monitor the puppy and dissuade it from doing it. With time your puppy will stop doing it.

When he bites, say no bite. Firmly. And stick a toy in his mouth so he can bite that instead of you. That's all I got. I had some dogs growing up, and did not mind them biting me because they were playing. They learned very quickly not to bite hard. When they would bite at my hand, I just put my finger in the back of their mouth where the teeth are far apart, and for some reason that worked. They had hold of me and were not hurting, because those teeth didn't touch each other. They learned to grab my fingers with the back of their mouth. I miss my dogs.
