Why did you start a collection?

Do you still have it? Did you outgrew it?
I asked myself all these questions when I was answering a post here.
I have collected several things in my life, mainly when I was little. I started with stamps and had a very nice collection as I had many friends from all over the world and those were the days of stamps and envelopes. Then, later on, I gave them to my younger brother and started a paper napking collection. That was short lived, because I started it in my teeens and got married very young. But my last collection had to do with my marriage. I married a a pro soccer player and he went to many countries in the world to play soccer. He always brought be a doll dressed with the national dress of the place he went. Two years ago, I gave my doll collection to my eldest daughter as a very much coveted Christmas present.
I only kept a man doll from the south of Chile as I had a very pregnant doll from the same place. I decided that she was in need of a BF to help her.

Hi marguicha
I have a full collection of Winnie The Pooh. They are not dolls but porcelains. Many were expensive and many of the people who knew me, and my liking with it always gifted me a lot of them.
I cannot part with them as they all bring so many memories from the times I scoured to find most of them and or the people who gifted me some.
Too funny about your partnering dolls.

I collect movies, specifically horror movies from all parts of the world. I always browse ebay most days and get some real bargains. Also I have a big interest in movie memorabilia and have a lot of stuff, posters, busts and figures and such. Some I collect and display but there is a lot that I buy to resell, some stuff if you know what to look out for can bring you in a nice profit.

Hi marguicha are you sure you were not replying to one of the horror movie discussions I have been in ? lol
Yes I have a lot of freaky looking figures and dolls in my collection, I must throw some pics up when I get the chance.
Vertigo is a great movie, Hitchcock at his finest

So, for you, dolls, mean voodoo dolls. There are lots of awesome psychological horror movies that were made about 50 years ago. I just saw Vertigo on TV and was amazed at how new it looked.

I have never collected anything. I like cats, so my friends all get me something with a cat on it for presents. I have run out of room and don't want to get rid of anything, because everything has memories. I have never seen a pregnant doll and I didn't know there was such a thing.
When my mother graduated from High School, they gave her a 1943 Looney Tunes comic. It has never been read, but it is in an envelope, not wrapped in plastic.
She gave it to me and thought it may be worth something. I thought about starting a discussion about it, but didn't know what to say. I know a lot of people collect comic books but I don't know how to contact them.

Hi cerebellum,
I´m enclosing a picture of my doll so you can see it. As for collections, you should start a post here about selling collections and I bet you will find interesting answers.

Hi marguicha~
I have books. Collection of books. There are still some which I never read at all and there are some I have read more than I could remember. I don't know why but I just like to collect books. Any kind and genres. That is why I feel a little awkward when they are e-books online because I like the traditional way, the smell and the scent of the paper. Still buy books adn read them when I have time~I also like to collect other things like bags, key chains, posters, drawings etc and I have them because I love the designs very much~

I have my house full of books but I wouldn´t say I collect them. They come to me to be read. And if friendds and family didn´t borrow many and never bring them back, I would not have a place to dwell anymore

I remember I had collected a lot of stamps as a kid. Stamp collection, I believe is called philately. I however gave up on that with the advent of the courier system in India. Nowadays, almost no one uses the postal system in India. However I still have a collection of the oldest coins in India. I guess my mother used to collect them and I just continued the tradition by adding to her collection.

Did you also inherit her interest for coins or do you look at them as an investment? As for stamps, I can see that a lot of children around the world passed through a stamp collecting stage

You had a pregnant doll and you kept a man doll to be that pregnant doll's boyfriend??? That's really amusing and maybe sweet of you.
I have a sticker and card collection of my favorite anime (Japanese equivalent of cartoon) and other stuffs of that anime. I also have a few stuffs of other anime that I loved when I was younger. I started my collection during my teenage years. Although I don't collect anymore, I haven't threw away my collection and I don't have any plans of giving it to anyone. I also have a small collection of stamps which I haven't been updated for a long time but I still correspond with my pen pals from different countries.

Many of the collections we have are so dear to us that we would not give them away even if we don´t collect them anymore. I gave away most of my doll collection to my eldest daughter only because she was my very own child. She is a middle aged woman now, but she looks at those dolls as she looked at them whhen she was little.

My first collection was little plastic animals from the local ice cream parlor. My brother took them and gave them to a friend. Since then I've had all sorts of collections. I collected pelicans for a while, then some broke in the Northridge earthquake, and I yard saled most of the remainder. Wish I'd kept one of the ones I sold. I also have a lot of books, Star Trek autographs, and a lot of other things that probably nobody would be interested in other than me.

Hi Dawn, I think that collections are mainly for the happiness of the collector. Even when we keep a couple of items that for everyone else is junk, we do it because it is meaningful for us.
I have lots of books, but I wouldn´t call it a collection as I never got them for any reason than reading them. Truem there are some authors that I "collect" in the sense that I want all the books they wrote so that I can reread them.

I have always loved troll doll. I had some as a kid and years later bought some for my daughter and myself as well. When my daughter thought she was too old for dolls she tried to get rid of her trolls ina garage sale. I pulled them out of the sale and kept them. Sometimes i make crochet clothes for them. My grandchildred has played with them too. When i got the internet i looked at ebay and thats when my troll collection grew now including 4-5 houses, troll dolls of all sizes, colors and makes. I choose for my collection one of each color and size and make the extras im making clothes and will be selling on ebay and/or given to grandchildren.

My sorority's "mascot" is a ladybug (hence my name, one of our colors is crimson...) so we all get and give ladybugs for every occasion. Somewhere along the way, my mom and some of my other friends jumped on the bug bandwagon and started giving them to me for various things as well. I have ten stuffed bugs, a pen with a bug on the end of it, a brass coat hook, garden "stones" (they're actually plastic and I used to have them hung on the wall), a silver bug pendant with a piece of amber in it's body, two watches....heh
I also collect ticket stubs from concerts and buttons/pins from the bands I've seen. They are all pinned to a cork board with pictures I'd taken at the shows.

One of my aunts also into collection of dolls from around the world. But she collected the miniature dolls which is hard to come by nowadays. As for myself, i am into collecting used stamps from around the world. Besides that, i am also into collecting used phone cards, which now is not popular anymore since with the available of the cell phone. Now, i just keep them in my cabinet and will take it out whenever my sister wants to trade some used stamps or phone card with me.

Yes, you are right. Whenever i visited my that aunt's house, i always like to looked at her collection of those miniature dolls.
Yes, you have a great point about phone cards. Especially, with some of the beautiful scenery and commemorative moments being captured and put on the phone cards. Makes them becoming special cards.

Collections, from what you tell me , are determined by age too. When I was a kid we did not have TV in my country and the web is also new. I have lots of normal paper books at home as I have loved to read all my life. Just one month ago, I bought my youngest granddaughter her first book. It is one of those chewable books you can place in the tub.

LoL I love your story about the man doll from Chile.
I have never been a collector. I decided when I was first married, I 'should' collect something because everyone else was collecting something. I decided to collect shot glasses from everywhere we went including local attractions, local restaurants etc..
Pretty soon EVERYONE I knew was bringing me shot glasses from palces they had been. Well, while it was considerate of them, I only wanted glasses from places I had been. So I gave them all away to my daughter.. eventually she started her own collection and gave away many of mine.

I had my stamp collection when I was a child because everyone had one and it was a matter of pride to get better stamps than the rest. Then my dolls began as a collection because my husband started bringing them to me as gifts when he travelled. But I´m not the kind of person that collects things really. I am more interested in my garden and in learning new dishes to eat and I write a bit each day.

When i was a little girl, my mom used to make dolls for me from used clothes, they had hands, legs etc, the eyes, nose were painted, when i married Professor, i brought them here in 1966, here i made dolls for my daughter and grandaughtes, some i gave them some i kept, you may not believe i have so many dolls of different kind, the 'little Kalyani' in me still plys with them..

Thanks for sharing about your collection, nice that you gave to your daughter.
God bless you, have a nice day ahead.

I know what you mean, sister, when you say you play with them. Maybe it is a different way of playing, but it is still the little girl you have within you. Maybe that´s the reason why I could not part with all my dolls. And my daughter wanted my doos but she is over 45 years old. I pity the people who have forgotten completly how to be children.
Many times, the stories I write are grounded in the fairytales I read when I was little only I twist them to become tales for grownups. I do think there´s much to learn from them and that there are many hidden meanings in them.

That is an interesting hobby of yours. You see collections of items can even bring you money by putting them in display as in art gallery but that is if you have collected so much to be viewed by many. You see it can be passed on to the next generation of yours and so its number keeps on increasing and who knows your great, great, great grandchildren will be having one man show for art collection only.

My dolls were never meant as a way of having money but as tokens of love. My then BF, who was a pro soccer player, brought me the first ones when he went to play to Europe with his team. He continued to bring me dolls, among other gifts, until he retired.
My daughter wanted the dolls as part of her childhood, but I don´t think she will add new dolls to the collection.
