What do you do to break up the day?

When you are spending all day writing, it can often be boring. You have a strong desire to get away from the keyboard for a while. What do you like to do in order to break up the day a little bit? Go for a walk? Watch TV? Do something else creative?

I have only little breaks every now and then. I have a book nearby which I read one chapter at a time on some breaks. Or I go outside and play with the puppies. (We have new puppies! ) Tv is actually something that I do simultaneously with online stuff because the tv is just next to the computer. For instance, right now I am watching tv as well - answering discussions during commercial breaks. =P

Lol! I find that it's the other way around for me. =P I end up not paying attention to the tv (whether it's the news, or a tv show that I'm supposed to be following, or a documentary/debate that I was looking forward to). I end up only half-watching, which sometimes really beats the purpose of switching on the tv in the first place. Work online for me is a on-my-own-time thing. Meaning my time here is flexible, whereas tv programs are on a schedule. I only watch tv at certain times of the day, while I am on the computer pretty much the whole day. Tv, for me, is not really a distraction. Instead, it is one break I don't get to fully enjoy. =P

Oh wow, the evils of the tv. I have always found that it distracts me from what I need to be doing. I used to watch tv while I worked as well, but I have just found that this does not help me when it comes to getting done the things that I need to get done. I have since moved the computer back to the desk in my room. By using this, I am not tempted to get distracted by the tv. If it works for you though, more power to you.

Well i dont spend all day at a keyboard but spend a lot of my day doing housework, chores and being a mum which I love doing btu from time to time we need a break. We'll offen go for lunch, baby group, nice walk, do some baking or even grab a nap sometimes. We don't tend to watch too much tv in day, we have a movie day on a sunday me and my son and thats about it really

Its nice that you spend a lot of time with your family. These are the ones that you really do need to make sure that you are spending the majority of your time with. It sounds like you are very good at doing that. I suppose that this question could have a wide variety of answers depending on different personal circumstances. I have always found that I have a lot of time to do different things if I so choose, but that is because I am 19 and live alone. If I want to make a 3am run to the store, I could do that. For those with families, it can a lot different. You have to allocate your "free" time to other things that you need to be doing.

I can't still in front of the computer all day, even if I am at home all day. I am a multitasker, therefore I give time to several different tasks while I try to get some writing in on the computer. For of those of us who do housework, this should be easy to do more than one thing a day; the automatic dishwasher washes the dishes, the clothe washer and dryer cleans and dries your clothes, and now we even have Roomba, the automatic vacuum to do the floors, so there is no need to be stuck at the computer all day, and not get anything else done. Automation has changed our lives forever.

I multi-task quite a bit and therefore, I may be here for a few hours and then go and write an article and or visit some of my other sites. I do take breaks because there are things I do. For the last month I have been volunteering at the Theater where my boyfriend does his shows so most mornings I am there and when I get back I can multi-task online as well as chores at home.

I have my days where I cannot concentrate on what needs to be done. Then I pay for it later as then I have so much I am either behind on and or did not get accomplished. Therefore, I re-assess what I did and or did not do so that I can catch up and or do the next time around.

I know what you mean. Although my productivity has been through the roof today, I have to wonder what it will be like tomorrow. Will I follow up this performance with even more? Or will I just go bust. It is rather difficult for me to tell until the day arrives. However, I know that I do not like it when I do not get everything that I want done finished.

I multi-task quite a bit as well. I feel like we are probably all guilty of this to some extent. I am just glad that I am able to buckle down and focus when I absolutely have to. Do you feel like you are able to focus when you have to?

Usually whenever I feel tired of writing I stand up and walk around my flat or open the TV,get in my armchair and try to find an interesting documentary to watch or watch sports;the fact is after a while a break is truly necessary, and after I do that and feel relaxed again ideas come easier to my mind,so I couldn't write all day long without breaks.

I like to watch documentaries quite a bit too. As a matter of fact, these are some of my favorite types of movies to watch. It is really cool that you mentioned that. I do like to make a movie night out of a documentary once in a while. I also go for walks, but I usually take mine outside. I live just down the street from a university, so I can walk onto campus for a while each day and just enjoy some people watching or something like that for a while before getting back to work.

I usually just chill and sit at the garden of our house. It is very calming there and no one would bother me. I write in my room as I can concentrate there more. When a writer's block strike, I would go to the garden and just sit there not thinking anything. ;)

That really sounds quite pleasant. I wish that there were more things around my apartment for me to do when I get bored of writing. Unfortunately, that does not really seem to be the case. A garden would be a wonderful place to just sit around and try to clear your mind. I know that we could all use a little break from the writing that we do all day long. It sounds like you really have everything all figured out for yourself.

I tend to go outside when I get tired of sitting at the computer. I have to get up and walk around whether I can take a long break or not. There are times when I get involved in what I'm writing, though, and don't break until it's done. Luckily, I don't write really long articles!

I am exactly the same way. I absolutely require some outdoors time each and every day. I also do not write very long articles at all, but it is enough to keep me business. This morning for example, I have been at work for about 4 hours with one short break to eat some breakfast. I too have days when you have to drag me away from the computer.

When I am spending a long time writing anything I do take a break and either go to the beach, read a good book, or play video games or watchtv. best thing I do sometimes is cuddle with my boyfriend and watch a movie. I tend to write while he is at work so I stop when he comes home. It's perfect :D

I usually try to break the day up by doing some writing and then doing some chores around the house. I find that I can write some while the first load of laundry is washing and then I can take a break to put it into the dryer and load another load and then write while those are going. I usually break for lunch and dinner as well.

This is a good way to do things. In fact, I may start to use some of this to help with the amount of chores I am able to get done. I usually focus too much on the writing. The problem for me is that I also end up getting very distracted most of the time. Thus, I am not able to even get the quantity of writing that I want to get done. Perhaps if I time my writing out with chores in the manner that you do, I may be able to get more quality work done.

Dear gods if I had a day where I did nothing but write, I'd be in heaven! I might actually get something accomplished! I'd never want to leave the computer. Actually, when I get on a roll with something, that's pretty much how it is. I don't want to walk away from it until I'm finished for fear of losing the momentum.

I love to have all of the free time that I do to just be able to write all day. It has really become something that I love to do. I think that there are times when I should probably spend less time on it, but then again, it isn't hurt anyone. The money that I make from writing is my primary focus, but there are other reasons why I write as well.

I write a lot at work and when I'm at home, too. Most of the time I would feel nauseated, spending long hours in front of the computer. I would always give myself 20-30 minute break once in a while to give myself a break. When at home, that would be easy. I will just have to either get a quick nap, play with my little baby. When at work I just have to move away from my desk and eat or have a chitchat with my friends.

I'm normally working on one of my novels, so generally I enjoy writing for long periods of time. Although, the article writing can get very tedious at times. I suppose when I'm ready to take a break I do a number of things. Go work on house chores, watch a movie or go outside and work on something. If I'm feeling energetic enough I will get out my sketch pad and do some drawing.

I am so jealous of your ability to draw. This is something that has always alluded me. In fact, I believe that the only creative thing that I am decent at is writing. I have always admired those who had the ability to draw though. I think you must be a very creative person to be both a writer and an artist.

Spending time at the beach with friends is nice. I suppose that this would depend on the location of where you live. This would not be an option at all for me, but it is nice to imagine that it would be.

I write on line all day pretty much every day. When I need a break I tend the garden or play with my chinchillas or go fishing for the afternoon.

It sounds like you and I are pretty much in the same boat then. I feel like I spend unusually large amounts of my day on the internet. At the same time, I suppose that I can't complain. This is what pays the bills after all! I think when I get bored of my main writing projects, I move on to Mylot to play around for a bit. When I get bored of writing in general, I take long walks. At least one walk per day is like a mandatory thing for me.

Well, I am trying to lose weight at the moment, so I have a 30 minute break at 11am (after starting work at 9am) and go for a jog, then watch and hour's of TV whilst having lunch from 1-2, then another half hour break at 4, then finally finish work for the day at 6. I try my best not to go on my laptop most days after 6pm, although I often end up logging onto MyLot because I am a little bit addicted to it! The discussions on here are just outstanding, and I enjoy being a part of them each and every day.

Hi Kinglobster, I doubt most of us have so much time to write. There are so many daily routine tasks to break up our days, such as preparing for lunch, shopping for grocery, returning library books, washing the laundry, mopping the floor etc. Even if a person does not leave the house, there are many things to do at home. I think with proper planning, the housework is enough to break up the writing routine, and provide physical exercises.

While I love doing my work here on the computer, I break up the day go to the beach to walk, read a book, or work on my crafting. I love to cross stitch so I can get lost working on it as much as being on the computer. Lately I have been watching the Casey Anthony case as it interests me when I have time to take a break and can concentrate on the court trial.
