because in their religion, it is a sin if people doesn't believe in God.... but to all religion people out there, they are not sure if their religion is correct.... why? because all different types of religion people claimed that their own type of religion is true while the others are false... even me, i am a Roman Catholic in Faith Religion and i cannot claim that my religion is true because there is absolutely no proof.... especially the bible.... yet i believe in God, but a universal God of all.... therefore, i am not an atheist....

I think some people cannot imagine not having any religion or religious beliefs in someone's life. I also think that people think that if you don't have religion in your life how can you have morals and values? Being an atheist is more common than you think, but people just don't go around announcing it. You don't need a religious belief to be a good and moral person.

Those weird looks aren't always because you're looked down upon. Not everyone has met an atheist before or knows much about them. Heck, most of what some people know is from our media image - which isn't a very good one. You may be the very first atheist they've met before. As for conversion, well, that's something to be expected from religious types. Those that do actually look down on atheists also look down on other people's beliefs. It's because they're the type of people who believe that only their beliefs can be right and they can't fathom why someone else would think differently.

Well dear, you are asking so I'd be frank in answering. I don't think all will people look down upon you although of course it is foolish to be an atheist and even the Word of God states "The fool has said in his heart there is no God." Well maybe really, there are those who will look down on you because they find you fool. But others will not really look down but will pity you rather. I myself will not look down upon you but would rather pity you because you are in a very risky condition. You were saying that people try to convert you. Well that is because they are concerned and would not want you to face eternal condemnation. Be thankful rather to people who tried and will try converting you because they do care for your soul. Nevertheless it is up to you to make the choice. But still I will try to convert you for that is my duty as a Christian so if you care then follow this link http://relijournal.com/christianity/how-to-go-to-heaven/ Good day!

There is a lot of stigma surrounding the term and I don't think a lot of people really understand and what we don't understand, we often fear. Some religious seem to think that religion and a god are the only things keeping people from doing horrible things to each other and that without a god there is no morality, which of course is false. Religion and god(s) play a big role in many people's lives, so when someone says they have no religion or no god it can be quite disconcerting.

I'm very looked down upon here where I live, because almost everyone here was born and bred on religion and most of them had never even seen an atheist before me. One woman actually asked me what atheism was! I think we're looked down upon because of the way they've grown up, as it is with most things. If it's out of the norm for you, you're bound to feel uncomfortable with it.

Maybe you just get the impression of only the ones who try to convert you, but if you were to compare that percentage of people against the rest of your friends, relatives, etc. you could tell there's no need to generalize. I'm a catholic and I think my religion has been critisized as well because of the action of a few religious leaders, not fair, not fair at all. But in the end, I feel calm because in my person I know I just speak for myself, I am responsible only for what I do.
