Do you find it hard to put money away for a rainy day or for something you really want to buy/do/see? I have the hardest time with it. Not because I forget to do it... It seems like every time I start to get close to saving enough for something I want, something comes up and I have to use that money and start saving from the beginning.
If you are successful in saving money, putting it away for a rainy day or for a vacation/university/camera/house/whatever, what tips do you have for others? If you aren't, why do you think you aren't? What causes you to not save money?

Personally saving money for me is easy. I mean it takes a long time because i dont have a normal job (i freelance). But that being said i just value things more. Like I went out with friends and some of us got icecream, it was 3$ for the icecream but it was the kind you could just buy at the grocery story for a big box of them for 10$ so i said its not worth it.
Also instead of going to the movies or something with friends that cost money theres plenty you can do at home like board games, table top games, cards (we play A TON of cards mostly president), also we've had a few movie nights were we watch movies off dvd or yes even VCR.
Theres always ways around other things. So it's just can you find the reasoning of the other alternative to make you decided if spending the money now is the best idea for you. (all of this keeping in mind all the things you can do with what you're saving up to buy and how it'd be alot cooler to be able to do it / or get it sooner.

Yeah me too I find it difficult to save money for something that I have in mind. The reason for the same could be my nature in regards to spending and also my party habits. I have a lot of things in mind but due to not saving enough money I cannot afford to get those stuffs and at time if I do end up saving then at the wrong time I have to spend it on something that has just cropped up because that is more important. I wish from now on I will be able to save some and try and get hold of the stuff I have been dreaming of.

I'm bad with money too. I'm only 19 so I guess I'll learn, but i hate that I use my money for food more than anything else. And I go across town to see my bf a lot, so a lot of my money goes to gas too. I don't have a job, my check is from the government, so i can pay for classes. But I'd really like a job. =\ It's hard to save money when you're always with your friends, or if you're addicted to rockstars, like me.

Yes,I find it very hard to put money away for a rainy day or to buy something I really want because I live in a poor country and even with several online activities I perform aside from my work I couldn't save anything yet, they just helped me ease my debt, but since perseverance is the key to success,I will keep on using Mylot and other sites and hope the day will come when I'm finally able to save money.

It has always been easy for me to save money. I really hate spending money unless its on other people or things that I need like food or gas. I have been like this since I was old enough to start spending money. My husband is the same way so we have a decent amount of money in our savings at the moment. We plan on using the money to put a down payment on our first house once he gets out of the military. :)

I'm not good at saving money because whenever I have some, I immediately call up friends and ask them to hang out. When we're already out, it's understood that we're spending too much than expected and you can't really save up with this type of mind set. Although there are times when I'm inspired to save up especially when there's something I wanna buy or if I wanna take my girl out to some place I saw that I think is cool to hang out with. So I guess that's it, I can save up if there's a short term reason for it.

Saving money requires commitment.Every payday you must set aside a certain amount to be kept or deposit directly to the bank.Refrain from unnecessary spending think twice or more before releasing that money.Focus your mind on your goal if ever you are tempted to buy.It is really a sacrifice if ever you want to save.

Hmm... well maybe you can try to save for the two things at the same time. Like having two piggy banks. One is for emergency purposes only. Whatever you put in there will not be used for anything at all, unless it is an absolute emergency. The other is for saving for things you want to buy. It might be a little slower since you are dividing the extra you can save into two things but at least the one for emergency will always be there.
Also, there is no lower limit to what you can set aside. Meaning, however small it is, if you can save it, save it. It will all add up.
For me, I rarely spend unless it is for something I need. If it is just something I want, but not really need, I only buy it if I have extra beyond what I would need for it, so I will still have savings left behind.

For me, It's hard to save money because I really have to pay lots of bills and if someone asks me to lend her some amount especially if it is my relatives, I CAN'T REALLY say no to them. I am still trying to save though it is hard but I am trying.

My friend told me that in order to save money successfully, we have to spend less but not deprive ourselves. I really find it hard to save money since I have a very impulsive nature. What happens is that I save a big chunk of my paycheck then suddenly i feel like im depriving myself and *poof* money's all gone. I guess saving for me is a psychological battle that is yet to be won but none the less im happy that I spend within my means.

hello crimsonladybug :)
i also have problems in terms of dealing with money especially when you already had your budget prepared and then out of the blue an emergency situation will pop out. so what i did, i really had to weigh things and prioritize. needs and wants are different. have a goal and be firm with your decisions on where you are going to use the money. self-discipline is one great factor that will help you to save up.

I think my situation is a lot like yours. I save up several hundred dollars to buy something that I really wanted, or to fully pay off a bill, or whatever and then all of a sudden something breaks, or the animals get sick, or we get sick and the money goes poof!
Of course, we also got ourselves into debt and we don't technically make enough money to claw our way back out, at least, not any time soon. So that's a big part of not being able to save money. We spend it all, every month.
