My thirteen year old daughter begged me to have her ear pierced a second time for more than a year, she insisted that it was the trend amoung her peers and that she would be a looser if she didn't have it. I gave in and christmas last year she got the second piercing. Two months later she came back again asking if she can get a third piercing on the upper portion of her ear! "Are you insane?" I asked...another piercing??? this time she did not say that her friends were doing this, now it just looks good and she get alot of attention, then it's the bellybutton and her nose. Can someone please tell me...is it an addiction??

Hey there, I almost started a discussion with the same question I wanted to know the answer as well. Why? Because I have this one friend and about a month ago we went drinking and after that he got one of his ears pierced. Now after a month, he has a total of 5 piercings in his ear. Well I guess it is addictive??

I don't think it's an addiction, but maybe a phase that she's going through. Give her a couple more years and if she still wants the piercings, I'd say let her go for it!

Just a fashion statement, I guess.
Personally, I do not like more than one piercing on each ear. I am a bit conservative when it comes to piercing and tattoos -- on my body. I have no problem with other people wanting to cover their bodies with piercings and tattoos, though. As long as they wanted to have those and they are confident wearing them, then I respect their self-expression. I even sometimes envy their daring.
As for your daughter, I guess it's only alright to have those piercings if she is really absolutely sure that she won't regret them one day.
Have a nice day!

Well, in her case she's just following a fad, I think, but for people who don't do it to become the center of attention, and just because they like body piercing, it tends to turn into an adiction. In my case I had to stop because getting pierced in a good studio is expensive, but I loved getting pierced and I always ended up going again once the last hole had healed to get another one

I think some people are addicted to the attention they get from having piercings in strange places or a certain number of ear piercings. But, for the most part, I think it's normal for teenage girls to want their ears pierced more than once, or even their upper ear pierced.

i could say it is if it goes unchecked.
i used to have 3 piercings per ear, a nose ring and a piercing on my eyebrow.
good thing i've outgrown that phase.
now i don't have any piercings. I am finally earring free since June 2010. So that's 1 year already woohoo!
i guess it's the pain and vanity that made me do it in the past

Hi takeover,
No, I guess it's not an addiction. It's just some kind of a fashion statement for teens. I remember when I was in highschool that my classmates had several ear piercings even though the school only allowed us to wear a single pair of earings. So what others do was that they brought extra pairs and wear them after class. I think others went for it because of peer pressure because we would usually see groups of friends all having several piercings. I remember a classmate having a piercing in her tongue as well .
But then again, I think it was just a phase. When I saw some of them in college, they've toned down in the piercing department . Most of them were only wearing a single pair.

Actually, it is not an addiction. It is just the trend and your daughter would like to be at par if not the best in body piercing. She wants to be "in" with what is the craze among her peers.
Maybe you should restrict her a bit, specially when it appears to be not good anymore.

That is the most dangerous thing you can do if he or she not doing the right things. Coz it hurting his own body and not someone else body. Perhaps you should warn him about the dangerous of using that things

I have no idea if it is an addiction. When my girls were young the fashion was just one piercing per ear. Now it is fashionable to have more. Also tattoos. I am so happy my girls are grown so I don't have to deal with all that. Good luck to you. I don't think it is necessarily an addiction with younger kids, though I have heard older people talking about being addicted to tatoos. I don't understand that and can't relate. Good luck with your teen..you probably know you are in for a bumpy ride.

Well, you know how us girls are. If we have a pair of shoes, it's not good enough, we want a NEW pair of shoes. We always want something new. So I don't think you'll be needing to take your daughter to ear piercing rehab anytime soon. I personally think that lots of piercings in the ear can look really tacky, and it's done so much that it doesn't really create attention anymore.

I don't think it's an addiction. More like a call for attention. I went to high school with this girl that has 11 facial piercings, she has 8 in one ear and 9 in the other. No telling what else she has. No one is going to call her a loser if she doesn't have more piercings, that was kind of silly for you to give into. I would just stress the importance of looking like a professional when she gets older.
