Does the breed of a dog really matter when choosing a dog for a family? I am a huge pitbull lover and supporter. I have had 4 pitbulls in the course of my adult life. None have been agressive and all of them were very people friendly. I had one named scrappy that was born around the same time as my son and they were best of friends. Scrappy used to sleep under the crib. I understand the stigma associated with pits but I really feel its all in how you raise them. How does everyone feel about breeds and families?

For someone who lives here in the Philippines, I'm not really particular what breed of dog I get. Every dog that we receive from a friend or anything that we tend to pick from the streets are considered blessings. Each of them have their own personality and all of them deserved to be loved.
I hate it when some people would try to buy a specific breed just to show of to friends but doesn't really take much responsibility taking the dog.

I really do not like choosing breeds for show either. A dog is suppose to be a member of the family not an item in your pocketbook (hand bag). I love all my pits and only because of the history of fighting in some they have a bad name. This is not a breeds fault its a human error. If I did not have kids or they were older then I would start rescuing pits again.

hi luvnmykids the breed of the dog for me it is not matter because there breed only makes them like to be known and there characteristics , a breed and an ordinary dog is just the same maybe they are different because of the qualities and size but it is the same DOG, pitbull are different there are some lovable and cute some or not maybe it depend upon the owner how he/she raise up the dogs.

I agree. It is in how you raise them. But with the stereo types on breeds and especially pitbulls its something that I think about alot with my kids. I try not to get a pit bull from someone that i dont know. If I can not see the mother and father then I really do not trust the dog. Temperments get bred into animals just like humans and even though i believe in rehabilitation for ex fighting dogs its not something I trust to leave alone with my kids. I love the breed though. I wish every one would raise there dogs to be lovers and guards instead of fighters.

A lot of people don't realize that Pitbulls are not nearlly as aggressive a breed as they are lead to believe. I think the problem arises because of what they are used for illegally, which is fighting ... and people use them as junkyard dogs too, which are often very aggressive--or trained to be.
But a lot of breeds can be very dangerous and people just don't realize it. They forget that all dogs are predatory animals by nature. They also don't research the breed they are looking at. For instance, German Shepherds and Labradors have a high bite ratio, they are also some of the most popular breeds which could account for the higher number of attacks.
I really think that people should research the type of dog that would be best for their family.

I agree. Its really in how the dog is raised and stereotypes are why they have a negative name. When I moved into my apartment my landlord said no bully breeds. I had to stop and ask her what is a bully breed? Because my mom has a toy pomeranian that runs the 3 Golden retriever like nobodys business. Princess is my definition of a bully. lol..... Its also important to know the breed so that you may accomodate your life to them or make sure they fit into your life.

for my own opinion, a dog breed doesn't matter. as long as you take care for your dog and treat him/her well. being a friend to your dog is really great. it can take all your the stress when your dog do something funny and entertaining =)
