How to stop nail biting?

My son is 2 years old and 3 months now, and he has this nail biting habit since he was still 1 year old. I understand young kids like to put fingers into their mouth, but my son has already started nail biting, and I am afraid it's a bit hard to stop. I had this nail biting habit when I was in primary school, it just became a habit and I did it unconsciously. I found it difficult to stop too. I always try to trim his finger nails, but he can still bite the nails off a bit. I explained to him, it may cause stomachache as his fingers may have germs and he is letting the germs go inside his stomach, but he still can't stop it. I really have no idea what I can do to help him stop this habit. Have you experienced this? How did you stop your kids from nail biting?

hi friend i have an idea but don't know how far it works. just use the neem tube and let his fingers / nails applied with that and after a min clean hands just with cold water.don,t use any soap wash to clean that.it will be hard to find your son biting nails again.the taste of that make him not to place his hand to mouth.

You can put scotchtape or put some pepper powder on his finger.

I wonder if it is heretitary? A nervous thing maybe? About the only way I know of to quit nail biting is to put something awful tasting on the finger nails. Allum or something like that. My granddaughter used to bit hers and she just grew out of it and now has nice nails. I think it could be psychological and maybe you should look at when this happens and see about issues that might cause it.

Hi there, thanks for your response. My son doesn't seem nervous when he bites his finger nails. It's actually last time his nail was a bit long, and he bite it, and now it just becomes a habit to bite the nails. Perhaps I should also look closer and see what exactly the cause is. Thanks for your suggestion.

My Aunt duct taped socks to my cousin's hands everytime she bit her nails. It worked she was three at the time.

I think putting some pepper powder on her fingertips would stop him from nail biting. My son doesn't nail bite, but he does thumb-suck. I tried putting pepper powder, and it did work in the day time. At nights he still unconsciously thumb suck while sleeping though.

I remember my sister she was doing it and finally became her habit to eat her own nail. She knows too that this not a good habit. This is a manerism I told her. But eventually we find out the solution for this kind of habit. Nail biters nibble on their nails for many reasons. Some have an oral fixation and derive comfort from chewing gums or toothpick in addition to eating their fingernails. Others chew their fingernails when nervous, stressed out or excited. Sometimes nail biters grow out of the habits, much like growing out of sucking sucking their thumb. However, as many adults as children bite their nails and the habit can lead to damage teeth, dry skin around the cuticles, open wounds on the fingers and bacterial infections. Since nail biting causes such harm, many try to break the habit through dozens of different method. Try to consult to a professional one to get rid off this kind of habit for a better solution. I hope it will help to those who also have this kind of habit. God bless

For kids - who suck their thumbs or bite their nails
You could try this product called Thumb which is for kids who suck their thumb and/or bite their nails. It's supposed to work however, I've never used it before so I don't know but it's definetely worth a try! The sooner you get control over this, the better off he'll be! Good luck!
