Slow Broadband

It takes me longer to connect to the internet now with Broadband than it did when I was on dial-up. There are so many updates, scans and pop-ups gumming up the works! I'm sick of sitting around twiddling my thumbs, or doing the washing-up sometimes, waiting for something to get moving! It is such a waste of time. Now, before anyone suggests I buy a better laptop, I have an old house to renovate, which takes priority over any other expense!
What is your experience with Broadband or Satellite?

If you are experiencing pop ups then you may have Adware on your Computer I would suggest downloading this http://www.lavasoft.com/ you won't need anything more than the free version also you can get this too it is really nice program and I don't use a Windows PC with out it being installed.

Now to your end question their is a big difference between Broadband and Satellite.
I will start with Satellite is is very and I mean very dependent on the Weather Conditions while your normal Direct TV or other Satellite Services can compensate for the interference. Internet via Satellite is buggy and you often have to resend for packets that get lost in the transmission. Also the communication rates aren't all that high from the Satellite back down to earth. So their could be a whole list of issues if you are using Satellite for your internet connection. Also Satellite is a Shared Connection so you could be sharing you connection with the people that are also subscribing to the satellite internet provider.
Now Broadband is Cable or DSL or Higher (T1,T2,T3,ADSL,Fiberoptic) These are wired connection all that have really good speed. They are also not Shared for the most part Cable is a shared/Dedicated connection. These for the most part deliver speeds of 1.5mbps and up. So I think it is more of your computer is junked up with some stuff but you can check here.

Thank you for the detailed explanations and useful links, Dark! I'll download the freebie and check things at speedtest, as I'm sure both will help. I am with Virgin, so I agree with you that I probably have a lot more junk that needs sorting out! Here we go again! ;)

If you cannot upgrade your computer right now, you should think about formatting it.
You are absolutely right, over time we install lots of software and then forget about it. But often these programs are running in the background using computer resources and can slow the system down. You could try to uninstall them one by one, but its time consuming and a pain. I advise you backup documents, pictures, and other important files to external drive or DVD/CD and format the drive. Then reinstall windows, or whatever OS you are using.
I do it at least once a year for that very reason.

That's a good idea, and thank you for the advice! I do uninstall things on a regular basis and, yes, it is a pain and very time-consuming! If I knew more about computers I would do what you suggest but I think I'll have to leave that sort of fiddling around to the experts! :)
