I'd not seen that one before - I'm familiar with freelancer.com (with an 'r'), which used to be GetAFreelancer.com. Freelance.com looks like it has much lower traffic... let me check: yes. Freelance.com has less than 10k hits a month. Freelancer.com has around 250k hits a month. I suspect they have a similar setup: you bid on a job, the employer picks one, you work, you get paid. Most freelance sites don't have a very big minimum payout - some have no lower limit, others set it at around $10 (which is usually 1 job). Assuming it has a similar setup, the first job is always the hardest to get because you have no feedback or history. As a writer, it's important to have a good portfolio (either on the site if they allow it or elsewhere on the web). One of the top posts on my blog is tips for Elance, which will work on most freelance sites. Quick resume: portfolio & profile, take on-site tests to show skills, bid carefully, bid sensibly, be clear you're not a company, don't use a template bid, be clear about rates and hours, get the RSS so you don't have to check for jobs all the time, get good feedback and be very patient for your first job!

The basic process goes like this: - You sign up for free membership. - You fill in your profile and, as a writer, make sure you have some of your best work available as examples (portfolio). The site might have somewhere to display your work - if not, keep an article or two handy on your computer so you can attach them to bids as examples. Make sure they're things that have already been published so you're not giving away freebies. - You search for jobs. - When you find one that interests you, you bid on it. Bear in mind you only have a certain number of free bids (often around 20 per month), so choose jobs carefully. - You fill in your bid. Tell them you write, why the job interests you, how much you want for the work, how long you think it'll take you to deliver (3 days, a week, whatever). - Attach an example of your work. Make sure you read the job description carefully: a LOT of employers ask you to put a certain word at the start of the bid (which shows you read the description, rather than just bidding on everything, as some companies do). Make sure you answer any questions in the job description. - Then you wait. If your bid is chosen, you'll be told and can start organising the work with the employer. - You do the work and deliver it. - You get paid. Some employers pay direct. Some pay into escrow (money goes to the site until the job is agreed 'complete', then released to you). Some won't use escrow. Personally, I like escrow as it shows the employer has the money and is willing to pay it, assuming you do the job well. That's about it, I think, without going into individual complexities. Does that help?
