Taking sick leave when you are not sick..

I have never gotten an opportunity (since my boss has been wonderful and he insists that I take leave sometimes) and I am not sure if I would do it or not but my friends do that. Like the other day a peer took sick leave when she did not want to come to office. This is something harmless and telling the truth might get her into trouble or she would just not get to enjoy the lazy rainy afternoon.
Do you do it as well?

I am doing super ! I must have been having heart troubles and didn't know it cuz after two bypasses, I feel better than I have in many years !
God knows what he's doing :)
I am glad we think and do alike ......some people just take advantage of every little thing not realizing there will or could be a time when they really do need the sick leave..
God Bless you,
quita

You certainly miss the fun when you sneak into the movie hall and happen to eye some colleague who belongs to a different lobby - all on a SL day, or getting caught while gorging in golgappas on the street!

hi mimpi.......yes some people do it but I never did it because, if we take sick leave then we have to bring letter from the doctor... and who wants to go to doctor, when you are not sick...besides like your boss, my boss is also cute and does not mind, if I go home a bit early or take a half day.......so till today, I did not do it, but that does not mean in future I will not do it.
Have a nice day.

That's nice of him. Life is little more sweeter because of the people like them. Also, we do not feel like taking advantages of them.

Indeed it's like a big family! I, for one, can relate to you. My boss has been wonderful and I would never do anything that might cause him inconvenience.

Absolutely right Mimpi, in fact if you are working long time at same job with pleasant atmosphere, then work place becomes a big family and you feel you too belong to this family. After all we spend 8 to 9 hours of our life daily in our office and we share almost everything with our colleges

Ive only done this once in my life so far. I traveled to another country ona charter plane. They left ona Tuesday and returned the following Tuesday. The company i worked for would not allow a vacation to divide the week. So i made a voice recording of me calling in sick. I had a friend call in and play the recorded voice on the monday and tuesday i was supposed to be back at work. Do one ever found out.

Ya, i sure did have a good time. I traveled to Jamacia. When theres a will theres a way. LOL!!! Actually i dont know why the company wouldnt allow me to take a vacation that divided a week. But i wouldnt of had to be so clever and sneaky if they did. It was just that the charter flight was a few hundred cheaper than taking a regular airline. It was so cool. Everyone on the plane cheered when we landed in Jamacia.

Yes a lot of people do it and yes i have also done it in the past because sometimes we wanna go out but due to office we cannot so we have to lie to our boss about it and make a reason so we can enjoy that day and complete our work.

Absolutely! Nothing could be worse than getting caught for silly stuffs. If we aint sure, we must not do it in the first place.

Yes we need to be wise when making such excuses so that we don't get caught and the boss does not have a clue about it and hence we can enjoy the holiday with fun and can do whatever we want.

h mimpi its always a gamble and if caught you might well lose
your job; I did this once but although it appeared I would be
caught the truth is I started out wanting this day off even though
I was feeling fine. But when I got a phone call to come to
my doctor's office because of some tests I felt sick and hurried to get down to my doctor's office. I met one of my bosses and told her I was on my way to see my Doctor she just wished me a good day and hoped it was nothing serious; Oh but it was the mri I had had done because of the adominal cramps showed I had to have gall bladder surgery. I was again in severe pain. The soonest they could operate was two weeks late. I tried to work but the pains came back worse and worse. My boss called me in and told me she could see I was in awful pain and she sent me home but told me she would mark me as hving worked all week so the last three days I was home taking it easy. that was one surgery that was the least painful I had ev er had. a bandaid surgery with a very small incision and I was able to go back to work in two weeks. I had wanted to come back in four days but myboss insisted I had to be checked to be sure it would be safe. I was lifting and paging books in the library; the doctor told me no two weeeks as he did not want me straining that area of my body.

OMG! You are brave hatley and I really have all the regards for you. It's not easy to withstand and overcome the pains but you have done it time and again. Taking sick leave when you are not sick could be bad for professional health. I think honesty pays off in the long run.

Hi mim,
This is not at all un usual. Even in there where I work people sometime do not turn up and they have their ready made excuses. They has sever abdomen paint, allergic reaction, loose motion etc etc.
If they are to attach doctors' slip they would collect that too but they would simply not go they would not go. Once in a blue moon even I have done that but compensated the loss later on.
Yes these could be just harmless that you could enjoy the heavy shower outside with a cup of cup of coffee sipping occasionally.
If it is one or two days days we do not take sick(medical) leave but we take Casual Leave here in out College.

I agree. It's fun when we do things unexpected, when we do not plan out things and follow our instincts. But we should be careful.

Mimpi i do this because we in total get 7 leaves in a year.So during the end of year if my SL are left i try to finish off within that year. And for that i have to tell lie to boss because if i tell the truth he won't approve the leaves. And i don't think it is wrong these are your leaves & you should use these whenever you find it suitable.
We should take these when you get ill in actual but doesn't matter if these are left & you consume these at the end of year if you're not ill also.

yes! if i can't tolerated my condition, because i can't work properly if i continued to worked if i know i am very sick. I rather got my sick leave just to stay in the worked, unless i can manage my worked even i am sick. But for us it was really difficult to get a sick leave unless you have a fever of 39Centigrade, that's why if it is simple headache or abdominal pain our company would not give any sick leave...

hi mimpi I just dont do that. I am at our office now for about 18 years and they cant fire me any more that easily so I am not taking that advantage lightly saying nothing can happen to me.
Plus my old boss and also the current boss both know when I call in sick that I am sick for real and its not only an excuse to skip work. They would never question I am really sick and I think in todays work world thats a tremendous privilege when your bosses trust you with the sick leaves you really need.

I really appreciate that Ritter. And I agree, it sounds easy to take privilege when we have a boss who trusts us. However, having said that, it gets difficult when you know that someone trusts you so much. We try to live up to that and not take advantage of it.
It was nice talking to you. Have a great day.

If you have sick days banked up, I would take advantage of it. Sometimes a break is necessary. I, however, can't take advantage of that kind of opportunity with school. If the opportunity presents itself I would take the day off. Of course, it also depends on if you get paid on sick leave or not. If not, it might be better just to push through it.

I have no scope to take any kind of leave as I am a full time housewife. But I can participate with the example of my husband. My husband never applied for a sick leave when he is not sick. But he applied for casual leave when he remain absent for illness. I wonder and once asked him the cause of doing so. He informed me that in his office sick leave must be supported by medical certificate. And as normal influenza or other illness which did not consuming more than 2 to 3 days he never going to a doctor, the sick leave will not be approved.

So long as it isn't done very often, I think it can be beneficial to both employer and employee as it gives the employee a brief rest and time for themselves. Some companies here in the UK have what they call a "duvet day" whereby a person can skip work without phoning in sick - just take the day off - but of course this "duvet day" out of consideration for the employer shouldn't be taken off when say there's something urgent in the workplace which needs doing, or on a day when it will in any way inconvenience other staff members. Done too often though, taking sick leave when you are not sick really is I suppose abuse of the boss and the company.

I absolutely agree with you. I think, you have read my mind totally and explained it really well. Abusing the employer and the organization you are working for could hamper your over all appraisal.

I don't like staying home for being sick when I really am sick, even though I realize that I have to do it. The reason for it is, one day might just put me behind and lets face it, there are a lot of times where life is hectic enough where even if you have all of the time, it is really hard to keep with the tasks of the day. There is just too much to do a lot of the time. Therefore taking sick leave, when I am not really sick, just because I don't feel like coming in, that is out of the question for me. I really think that there will be some days where I don't feel like coming in but that is just something that I have to deal with.
To me, when I'm really sick, that's the time where I have to take off. There are going to be days like that and it looks bad when you take off too often. What if you stay home for being "sick", then about a week later, you really are sick. That really is not going to look all that good and people are going to wonder if you are really sick, even if you are really sick. So yeah, got to pick and choose your spots. I can guess that three fourths of all of the work force, if not more, have days where they don't want to come in for various reason. It is just something that you have to grit your teeth and do and save the sick leave for when you are really sick. That's just life.

Indeed so! It's no point taking sick leave when you are not sick for you never know what's going to happen when. I do not remember the last time I took off from work. It feels bad to put someone into inconvenience when he cares for us so much. May be, i will, sometime next month - to recharge.

No, never. Luckily for me, I don't fall sick much. But reporting in sick when you are not really sick is kind of dishonest. Everyone gets other kinds of leave as well, the kind you have earned, and its healthy to take that kind of leave. So why lie about a little thing? It may not be a big deal, but if the people in the office find out, your image and respect will go down a little bit.

Yes , it often people take sick leave like just like taking rest day, the doc usually will give Medical Cert for simple things like food poisiong , migraine , cannot stand with dizzy spells and such, i guess they will not take more than 2 per month, however, taking too many MC will effect the job performance and such. Not all panel docs give MC freely, some are more strict and such.
