Is depression a medical condition that needs to be treated with pills?

I have been hearing that more and more people are on depression pills. Does this mean more people are having problems in their genetics or the chemicals in their brains? Is it because jobs are hard to find, so people are becoming discouraged?
I think people really should try meditation, exercise, more sleep, a better diet, more time with family, anything, before they start taking pills.
I don't know how many people are legitimately sick. I could say that I have been through depression in my life. But I have taken action, and I am a much happier person. I don't know if it was me, or my mindset.
If some people truly are sick and need pills, they need to be treated. But even they should not just be given medication and not a way to depend on themselves.
What if we send people who feel depressed out to some third world country to work with starving orphans? Maybe they would realize that their lives aren't so bad.

I recent the idea of having my serious, depression-causing problems, reduced to a chemical imbalance. However, severe stress and agitation do have the effect of changing the chemistry of our brains. Anti-depressants react to the chemical imbalances and allow us to respond to stress in a normal way. This enables us to see our problems in a different way. That is how anti-depressant work.

Depression isn't about people feeling as though their lives are bad, it's a chemical imbalance in the brain which cannot be controlled by the individual. However, I believe that there are things that there are things that an individual can do to improve their own mood without the need for any medication. Things as simple as getting Vitamin D from the sunshine can help to enhance mood, as well as eating foods such as bananas and exercising. These things should be tried before you consider getting professional help, as you might just be suffering from a low mood as opposed to actual clinical depression.

No doctor, no pills , no medication is actual solution to get rid of depression. Medicines are for physical sickness and not for mental, but they just help to gain time. Yes time because TIME is the only real medicine that will help us to come out of our depression. It is good that people have short memory and with time it starts fading and the pain starts to reduce and as time passes, man comes out of his depression.

people forget that will mental issues, they still have a physical cause. part of the brain doesn't work right.
when part of the heart or part of the digestive system doesn't work right, people respect that. when part of the brain, which is an organ too, has something about it which PHYSICALLY doesn't work right, people treat it like it's completely different to any other organ not working.
when someone can't produce insulin, people respect that. when it's the brain and not the pancreas that can't make the right chemicals, people blame the person with that illness for having a bad attitude.
in that case, maybe diabetics should just buck up their ideas, and be more positive, and their illness will go away too.

I think anyone who thinks depressed people should just "take action" or "keep themselves busy" haven't truly been depressed. Or at least not to the level that people are that makes them seek out medication. It's not always as simple as taking action and getting over it. I've been pretty depressed for a few years now. In my head, I wanted to be super good at keeping my house clean and getting organized. I'd think the night before of all the things I wanted to get done the next day. The next thing would come and I couldn't get anything done at all. It was like I was numb. Then the fact that I didn't get it done made me sadder and I felt worse. I've tried one medication but it made me sleepy all the time, so I'd like to go back to the doctor to try something else. I don't want to be on medication forever, but I need something to help me climb out of the hole I feel like I'm in.

For a depressed person, Motivation is much more important than giving pills. Pills are not going to improve the condition until the person is relieved from stress or other problems which are the root of his or her depression.
It does not means that a depressed person does not need pills. In cases when depression is severe and the person is getting physical problems and other symptoms like irregularity in sleep pattern, excessive headache etc. then the pills should be taken as recommended by a psychiatrist.

Not necessary that depression can be handled with pills infact the best way to cure depression is by means of changing the thought process, no matter how many pills you give if the thought process is negative then the person will remain depressed, Now coming to treating depression, one can meditate and exercise or remain busy as these are the way that keeps the mind well protected from depression, what actually happens in brain during depression is that a chemical is realized according to your thoughts and you tend to think on that issue for a long time. It is very necessary to treat depression or else it can have a bad effect on health. Also praying is also the best solution to handle depression you can acquire best spiritual power to cope with depression.

I think depression can be managed by the person himself if he fights it. He has to know the signs and not succumb to this ailment as it could progress beyond medication.

Not always because some can see a psychologist and counseling sessions seem to be all they need. There are people who go through life very depressed and do not even recognize it is depression. Some actually get better simply by speaking amongst others.
It would really depend on the severity of the depression where some absolutely cannot relax, sleep, loss of appetite, etc...
A psychologist can evaluate a person to determine if a psychiatrist is necessary or not at which time a psychiatrist determines if one needs medication or not. It is my understanding that a psychologist cannot prescribe medications.
Some people as mike says above do have a chemical imbalance, having that diet and exercise will not be enough, from what I have always understood.
I can somewhat relate to what you are saying as I have gone through periods in my life due to circumstance which have caused me to be pretty depressed, though I have never been on medication. So it really depends on the severity and or type of depression.
