I think having a business like that of avon is great. They have great products. And its up to you on how you would handle it so you will earn more.

I remember being thrown out of of the house by an ex girlfriend because she had an Avon or Tupperware party. She actually paid me to go to the pub for several hours. That was a long time ago!
On reading this, my first thought was, are we that sociable anymore? With so many people not even knowing their neighbors by sight, collecting potential customers for Avon must be quite difficult. I suppose it depends on how sociable you are.
Back to your question, the "rule" is to never buy anything for yourself.

I helped my mom sell Avon for about 2 and a half years and while she didn't earn money enough at it, there are plenty of people who have. She spent more than she made because she liked having the Rep discount, and often she bought herself unnecessary items. The trick is to get known. Put yourself out there, like sending brochures to people along with samples, and showing them the success you've had with their products. Also, sell to your coworkers. And never buy bulk in huge amounts. If you plan to do this, buy two or three of something instead of 15 or 20. You'll just end up with unnecessary items that sit around your house collecting dust.
