How do you make a transparent background?

I'm using Microsoft Paint on Windows 7. I need to create an image using white lettering and to have a transparent background, so that the letting will show up against any background it's pasted on. Is there a way I can do that, or do I have to look for another software?

I would say get Gimp it is a lot easier and your images will look a lot better than using Microsoft paint. Gimp is a Free and Open Source Photoshop it has a better method of creating images and you won't get the block effect if you use Gimp where everything in MS Paint is square so that you can't really create a really good image for Online or otherwise. And like I said its free. Also save as .png as the guy above me said.

Well Gimp is the closest you will be able to get to Adobe Photoshop without having to spend the $$$ for it I mean really Adobe Photoshop is really really nice but Gimp is Free and well that is a big difference. I have used Gimp and Adobe Photoshop they are extremely close so you aren't losing to much by using Gimp. Photoshop has a lot of little perks like some special formats for other Adobe products and things nothing you really need to focus on. But here is a link to Adobe Photoshop because well someone is going to suggest it as well.

Ya, it is quite expensive, for sure. I do prefer more simple photo editors, and I have one from NCH Swiftsound software, theyre' really good, especially for n00bs like myself, hahahaha - I just needed to make a transparent background for an image, that's all, and NCH doesn't provide that service, and neither does MS Paint.

hey... all you need to do to make no background is erase the background on the image... and then have your image with white lettering and then when you go to save the file save it as a png.. and it should keep your no background...
if it saves as a jpg then it will automatically created the background...
so when you do your thing
save as... .PNG file...
enjoy let me know if you got it working
