Abusive Tagging Here On MyLot...

United States
June 19, 2011 11:14pm CST
Hello fellow MyLotters, You know, it really annoys me when people decide to put ridiculous and immature tags on discussions here on MyLot. Tagging serves a purpose, and if you are not interested in tagging your discussions, responses, etc... simply do not tag. It's not necessary to tag discussions with immature things like vulgar words, and random things. There is no point in it. Others can see it you know... Honestly, it doesn't just annoy me, it kind of makes me a bit angry. I see it as a form of abuse here on MyLot. I have really grown to love this site, and I don't appreciate it when people abuse it. How about you guys? How do you feel about this issue?

Hi Angelee! If we keep our eyes open here we can see that a lot of people have, sadly, a lot of time to waste ANy tags that are irrelevant to the topic, including usernames, single letters, numbers and of course abusive words can be reported. Admin is very quick to remove them and keep things clean as they should be and we can all do our part to report them whether they appear on our own topics or those started by others.

It is the first tag if it appears as soon as the topic is posted (because the 'offending' word is in the topic itself) but if the word that triggers it appears later in a response and/or comment then it will appear to the right of the list. I believe, but I would have to test this, that if more responses and/or comments appear with more words then it word move up the list towards the left (the first tag is the most popular FYI)

I am not sure, but I am thinking that the "mature content" tag appears first when the mature content is in the actual started discussion. However, if someone responds with something that has mature content in it that triggers the filter, then I am assuming it would go somewhere other than the first tag. I am not sure really, but it's not that big of a deal. :-)

I have yet to see such abusive tagging. I really don't pay attention to tags. Haha! But I always tag words that I see appropriate to the topic. Like you, if I see such kind of tags I will be very displeased. Of course, My first course of action will be to rate the poster negative. It is disappointing to hear that such abusive tags are coming out here.

How could you rate the poster negative when there is absolutely no way of us knowing who tagged the discussion and which tags they used. Also, you can tag a discussion without responding to it, so the tags that you see are not necessarily added by any of the responders, and therefore you would not be able to rate him or her negatively.

Yes, I agree with purple. It's impossible to rate the poster negative, as there is no way of knowing which user tagged the inappropriate tag to the discussion. I think it is best to simply use the (!) button next to the discussion to report that there are inappropriate tags. Then, it will be dealt with by the MyLot staff. :-)

Honestly I haven't noticed these abusive terms on tags. I agree that these things shouldn't be tolerated. I only use tags when I create my own discussions. When responding I don't really do it because I find it a waste of time. Honestly, what's in it for someone who responds to a discussion? Are we going to earn extra points if we tag discussions we respond to?

Tagging does not cause earnings but it does help dicussions to be visible both in search engines and in the column over there --

Yes, I see your point my friend.Sorry I haven't notice it.Sometimes members do forget or maybe do it without thinking the restrictions about tagging.Abusive or mature tagging are forbidden.I guess GAA can not monitor all this things so the best I guess is the one who noticed it can do the reporting.

Yes, the MyLot staff cannot monitor everything constantly on their own. That is why we must all do our part as members of MyLot and report abusive or inappropriate behavior! :-)

I have seen that sometime people do tag which is surely not related. Well tagging is an important thing. It helps the users to search the topics related to tags. So better people take care of it.

I agree. Tagging serves an important purpose here on MyLot, and should not be messed around with. Tags should be relevant. That is why we as members of MyLot should all do our part and report inappropriate tags. :-)

I find it amusing. Sometimes it's taken too far, but it's just tagging. I don't think it's major problem.

Irrelevant tags are not a problem - they are a violation and as such are removed by admin. Repeat offenders risk their accounts.

The best way to get around this is to tag the discussions yourself. If you are starting the discussion, use up all 5 tags allowable. If someone has started a discussion but hasn't, then jump right in and finish or do the tagging before some jerk does. I don't know why they do it. There are troublemakers everywhere.
• United States
20 Jun 11
Eh, why go through all of that trouble just for some immature jerk who wants to tag with silly word like buttcheek, or some vulgar word? I think it's better to just report it.

They can be something so simple, start with any words used in the discussion. Better to put in barely significant words than to leave it open to abuse.

hi angelee that sort of abusive tagging is against mylot admins laws and they say since they can not always spot them we should always report it. if they catch the person he or she can be kicked off mylot. I think it is both childish and grossly mean to do this. grow up you morons who thik its funny to put your childish insulting tags on ou r discussions. youu can be reported and dismissed also by the admins.

I agree with you that there is absolutely no point in abusive or irrelevant tags. We use tags to try to find discussions to respond to or to make sure that we are not starting a similar/duplicate discussion, etc. When things are not properly tagged or improper tags are more abundant than the legitimate tags, then we might not find what we are searching for, which is counter productive to the entire search option.

It's the first I've heard of it. But it does seem very easy for malicious users to abuse the tagging of discussions. I also don't see any purpose in it, and is just annoying. And I'm sure discussions with these just get deleted.

If the discussion is within the Guidelines then it remains and admin removes the abusive, irrelevant tags.

I've seen a lot of discussions tagged as Mature Content on really innocent discussions - I mean g-rated discussions. I dont' think it's fair that we can't delete our own tags if need be, because I certainly don't appreciate my topics being tagged as Mature Content.

I agree, one of my recent discussions was tagged as mature content. All I asked was how to make homemade chicken nuggets... :/ How is that mature content? LOL

Yes, that's is really annoying. That's why if I am not sure what Tag I will put in a particular topic I leave it blank, I guess it is better than abusing the tag usage. I agree with the first poster, maybe you can report them.

definitely it is very bad thing i think you should report this.i really do not know how to report for any abusive tags in mylot.but you can start a discussion about it and can know how to report it,some senior mylotters can tell you about that. frankly speaking i never take even a look at the tags which other people gives to my discussion.but the problem you are facing is very disgusting. hope you will soon get rid of this problem.

wealthybhavik as the leader here in ranks I know that you can report byh hitting contat then rolling down until you see other then report the abusive tags and also give the name of the discussion so they can look it up and delete them. I once had to do this as I got an insulting tag ie you old hag you so I reported it to admins giving them the name of my discussion and they could delete it. hope this helps when you see one that is abusive. we do not have to stand for that crap.

GAA is GoAskAlice, who is really now an "Alex", but they did not change the user name, although he did change his profile page ... and either way GAA still works for both Alice and Alex. And yes, he is the myLot Admin that appears on our discussions from time to time.

Could someone tell me exactly what "GAA" stands for? I am thinking GAA is the MyLot Admins, but what does "GAA" stand for exactly?

I have seen it too and I agree with you... I don't understand why they feel the need to do such idiotic tags... They are there to help others find discussions that fit the tags much easier. What good is it going to do with irrelevant tags anyway?? Some people just don't get it... I'm glad they can be reported, and I hope the people responsible are stopped.

I never really noticed this.Maybe it's because I never look at the tags on discussions.lol But I agree with you.I see how it could bother some people who actually look at the tags and how they can be offensive to some people.

I've seen a few times. I don't get annoyed a lot, but the way people go to lengths to tag that way is beyond me. I just hope that people learn to take it seriously and keep it simple. It seems that people try VERY hard to be funny here and waste time on tagging rather than keeping discussions relevant, which is the point of mylot anyway :(

I too have noticed abuse of the tagging system but not as much as some of these other people have. I haven't seen any vulgar words yet, just some off topic, random tags. I generally ignore it because it will get reported eventually but now that I know it's a problem I will report it if I see it.

I also don't like abusive or inappropriate tags. I usaully don't fine appropriate tag then used to skip & submit response every time its not necessary that you have to put tag. We ahould report it to admin for anyone using abusive tag as it against the guidelines. I have reported some of the discussion to admin but i have never reported any abusive tag but will going to report now onwards if found as i did not know that tags also can be reported too.

I feel the same way about that. I have seen some discussions with words like 'guideline violation' but I've never seen any name calling.. but I don't think anything other than a legitimate tag is necessary.
