Driving alone in the dark - I was afraid - is this normal?

This night I drove my husband to work for the first time, because I need the car tomorrow. The way there was ok, because he was sitting in the car, but the way back I was alone. Alone for 40 km through nothing else but forest and wilderness. Nothing in between. It felt like driving for hours. It was dark, drizzling and the fading center line and side line made it hard to focus on the right side of the road. I imagined a lot of situations which can happen on the road and got really frightened. I slowed down. After about 30 km I saw the city lights on the horizon illuminating the deep hanging clouds. I knew I still had some km to go. When I reached the first street light of the city I felt safe and relieved. Who has the same experience with driving in the darkness?

i think it's pretty normal being scared driving in the dark and alone. I would be so drenched in sweat if i were in the situation that you have explained here. Anyway I haven't been in such situation but let me share my story. When we're out f=driving at night and i'm in the back seat with the light turned out and alone, that freaks me out. That is why I always take the front seat and ask my mom to sit in the back

I have a fantastic imagination and the first time I realized it was not good while driving through the dark. It really gave me the creeps. Usually I love it to have loud music on the radio but this time I couldn't enjoy it because my only question this time was..."What if...?" I should stop watching CSI or other scary movies. Do you think it has a big impact on your imagination if you watch too many scary movies?

Well I had never though of it that way but when I think of it now, I think it does play a big role. I mean if we had never watched movies and documentaries, we would have never known what kind of thing to imagine and stuffs.

I think it's pretty normal. I would freak out too if I were in your shoes. I would probably start imagining things like car break down, bad guys or something like that and become more paranoid. I would tune up my radio as well. I don't have a place to go that far after dark. The longest route with no people was only around 10 km. And I speed up on that road.

Yes prinzcy, I would have pushed the gas pedal down if I only could see the road better. But I didn't want to risk landing in the ditch. I forgot to mention that there was no cellphone reception until I reached the city limits. I can tell you I will never do this again. My husband can have the car and drive to work by himself :D

I think maybe it was just because you aren't used to it. I don't ever remember feeling like that driving. I guess I just figured that if I were in my car and moving then I was pretty safe. I find it peaceful and relaxing to be the only one on the road. Now walking might trigger my imagination and I might feel a bit afraid.
