Hello friends, I am in a big problem. My daughter has scored 95% in CBSE class 10th. She is topper in her school. She wants to become an engineer. But the problem is WHICH WAY IS GOOD, SHOULD SHE DO POLYTECHNIC OR SHOULD SHE DO 11th, 12th AND ANOTHER PROBLEM IS WHICH FIELD IS MOST SUITABLE FOR GIRLS-MECHANICAL ENGINEERING OR CIVIL ENGINEERING.
Please friends, help me what to do? It is all about her future, I don't want to take any wrong step because it can spoil her future. People are misguiding me, she is also worry about this problem. These two questions.............POLYTECHNIC OR 10+2...........MECHANICAL ENGINEERING OR CIVIL ENINEERING.
PLEASE FRIENDS HELP ME...............PLEASE.

Well I will suggest you to ask your daughter, what she wants to study or what profession she will love to to. Do not go for a diploma. IF she is interested in a particular subject, let her choose that even if she does not want to go for professional degree.
The decision solely lies with her...
Have a nice day!

Civil as well as mechanical engineering is not for girls as it requires extensive field work and extreme working conditions. I will prefer computer engineering, electronics and communication engineering and chemical engineering for girls.
All the best!

Congratulations! She sure is a bright girl. I have the same problem with my son when he completed is secondary education that we call here Form Five. Since he did extremely good in the public exam he was chosen for a two years matriculation to gain entry to university. During that matriculation period he was undecided where or what course to take. Since he is good in Mathematics and physics he opted to take a three years degree course in geo-physics. Now he is already in his fifth year working in an international oil company as a geo-physcists. Though it is a challenging career he enjoy the work.

First of all, I would like to congratulate your daughter! I've never heard of this test before, but 95 seems like a great number. Is this in a country outside of the US?
My dad is an engineer, so he knows a lot about this stuff. But personally, I think it's completely up to your daughter. I've never met a single person who walked into college having their entire college career planned out, then followed that EXACT plan. Everyone experiences a little each day in college, and they eventually change their plans a little here, and a little there, and eventually, they'll come across something they love.
I would suggest to not ask people what is suitable for girls, but to actually allow her to try it out. Do some research on each science, and see if you can find some seminars or programs that allow her to experiment with some of these. Once she gets a feel for each one of these, she can decide which one she thinks is the best for her.
Happy mylotting!

It's really true friend that it is up to her what she want to do but as a parent I want her to achieve her goal without any problem. but you are 100% right, she said she want to go through +2 and i agree with her. and you asked about CBSE it means Central Board of Secondary Education. I don't know whether this pattern of study is going on in US or not.............we are living outside US.

Hello Nitu
First of all hearty congrats to your daughter for being the top scorer of her school.
And coming to your point, i'm an engineer too. I would prefer 10+2 if you want your daughter to be doing engineering. The reason for this is, an intermediate leaning which is the 11th and 12th will help your daughter grow as a person with a little more responsibilities. She will learn the seriousness of her life and studies in this age. Putting her right away into college will somewhere reduce a little seriousness as this is the age your girl might get diverted from studies. Peer pressure will build up a lot at this age and she somewhere might not get it right in the college at this age itself. Let she study her 11th and 12th and then once she matures rightly, she will be ready to step into college and by then she would have handled how to manage the peer pressure and experiencing the college for the first time in engineering is a good feeling trust me. And the fact that I told she might lose interest and divert is because, I have a few people who came from polytechnic background to engineering. Almost everybody lacked the seriousness about the studies and unfortunately almost everybody except 1 or 2 dropped their studies because of the attachment they had with their peers and because of the lack of eligibility to continue with the studies. Moreover, doing 11th and 12th will help your daughter study better in engineering because she wil be studying a few basic concepts in this classes only. Take up Computer Science as the major elective in 11th and 12th. Because computers play a very important rold in an engineer's life no matter whether she will be an civil engineer or mechanical engineer, you need to know the C languages of computers.
Coming to the second question, Civil or mechanical! I would prefer a civil because, mechanical doesn't suit much for girls to go and handle those lathe machines and all the other machines. I see my friends (only 2 girls in a class of mechanical in my college) struggle a lot in mechanical as those are the things which are not meant to be for girls. And the placing opportunity for the mechanical engineers is a little less. So go for Civil engineering. It would be good for your daughter's future. Still if you can think about "Electronics and Communication" or "Computer Science", i will be more happy because your daughter seems to study really well, why do you want her to struggle a little in the future for the job opportunities. Electronics and communication & Computer science are the ruling courses in engineering and they have wide job opportunities in the future. Whatever it is, ultimately learn your daughter's interest too. Because she is the one who is going to study. Make some more research on all the courses available in engineering and tell her about everything and the opportunities she will get of all, show her the available ways and let she decide which path to go!
Good luck for your daughter's future. Have a nice day!

Thanks friend, your information is really helpful for me. It is true that it is difficult for a girl to handle such big and lathe machines but if she will become a civil engineer in future then she will have to do lot of site work, and when I read about civil engineering, it was given that the entry-level engineers are put to work primarily monitoring construction in the field and that is not good for girls in my opinion. I am not saying that you are wrong, you are an engineer, you know about this field much more than me.
And another thing i.e. of doing 12th instead of doing diploma course, that I think is good. But I came to know the student going through poly for degree courses have more practical knowledge than those who go through 10+2 pattern and some students from my town who are engineer now, they advised me to let her go through diploma courses, they said that diploma holders have more practical knowledge of engineering, I agree with you that they have limited topics and they can gain much more knowledge by doing 10+2 but when her aim is fix that she want to become an engineer then I think there is no need of studying those extra topics. It is good that she should have knowledge of those topics also that are extra.
Hey friend, I am really confused, don't think that I am trying to prove you wrong. Please guide me friend.
Once again thanks for your support and once again asking you for help.........
