I was reading a discussion about line drying towels. A lot of the responses to make the towels softer were to put vinegar in the rinse water. This got me to thinking about all of the different used for vinegar. There has to be atleast a million! So lets share! What are some of your uses for vinegar?

I maintained a list of over 200 uses for vinegar at one time. Some of the most popular was cleaning, laundry and oddball things like deodorant. To clean windows, add a quarter cup of white vinegar to a quart of water and use it like a brand name window cleaner. To clean hard floors (not recommended for daily use on wood floors), add a half cup to a gallon of water and wash as usual. To clean faucets and other plumbing fixtures, wipe with a cloth saturated in plain vinegar, then dry. If the plumbing has lime deposits or water spots, saturate a cloth with vinegar and tie around the area. Check every hour or so to see if it's ready to scrape off. Vinegar will also dissolve calcium and other minerals, so be careful of where you use it. It makes a good deodorizing soak for dentures (they're made from a type of plastic) Vinegar neutralizes bleach and any chlorine product. If you use bleach in the laundry, keep a spray bottle of vinegar handy to immediately treat spills or splashes. There are a lot more!

And I didn't know it neutralizes bleach!!! Wow! Thank you! I always seem to spill bleach when I use it, so now I can stop ruining things! Vinegar is great for a lot of things, I have written an entire article on it. It is great for mixing with water and washing hardwood floors, the sit l goes away after about 45 minutes, but it doesn't do damage like some products can. Also baking soda and vinegar with a little dish detergent with degreaser can clear a clogged sink. You can also put some in your dish water if you have really greasy dishes and it will help cut the grease and clean the dishes faster.

great tips! I like the dishwashing tip. I clean the microwave with a cup of vinegar then pour that into my sink of soapy water

I also use vinegar for cleaning and stain removal, and several of the mylotter responses above give great ideas. The oddest thing I do with vinegar is make cheese, I tried it out once because a friend told me about it and every so often when I don't have time to go get cream cheese at the store I make one. There are several videos and recipes online here are 2 links : http://www.ehow.com/how_5477354_easily-make-cheese-vinegar.html and http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Cheese-at-Home

It works well, just take care with the vinegar as if it is in the wrong quantities it can have a sharp taste. It is quite delicious, at least my family and I liked the ones we've made (we've tried variations of the recipe with different vinegars and milks - low fat milk works but it gives a lot less then half cream or full milk). A further advantage is that it is easy to flavour, for instance with chives or other spices, and since you can make as little or as much as you want it does not go off as quickly. PS Remembered another use for vinegar, cleaning copper/brass it is highly effective.

I know a lady who rinses her hair in it, because it cuts grease & I think she said it also removes any detergent in her shampoo. The smell goes away even before your hair is dry. It makes hair softer too.

LAGLEN: I'll hafta try it, then. My soft, finer hairs are falling out ("thyroid problems," sez my doc), so my coarser ones are making my hair feel rough these days! I used to have several huge bottles of vinegar, but I think they must not have moved here when I did. Oh, well. Vinegar's cheap. Or it was...this current economy? Who knows any more? That's actually really interesting. I have never heard of anyone actually rinsing out their hair with vinegar. I'm sure it may smell (I abhor the smell of vinegar), but one may be able to cover it up. My hair gets greasy very easily - I get it from my dad - so I have to frequently wash my hair, usually once a day. I've read from many places that that is extremely bad for your hair, because the chemicals in the products can have detrimental effects on your hair's health. This seems like a good way to change that. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know about a million, but just the other day I tried scrubbing the grout in the floor tiles with chlorine bleach & Ajax for ages, letting it soak in as well. This didn't do very much at all. I tried vinegar - just the really cheapest supermarket bulk variety & within five seconds of scrubbing, it removed stains & whitened where the chlorine wouldn't! I thought it was the combined action of the previous chlorine, so to prove a point, I tried using straight vinegar on the rest of the floors without chlorine & bingo - worked just like before. I'm ditching the Domestos & Ajax & sticking with vinegar from now on! I've also got a report somewhere on 101 ways on how to use vinegar to improve a person's health, but I'm moving house, so I doubt whether I can find it.

really? worked great for me. I was living in the country, bad well water and my shower head had very low pressure. I tied a bag full of vinegar around the head, let it sit for about half an hour then ran hot water, worked like a dream!

A friend of mine swallows a tablespoon of vinegar every day to keep her weight under control. Not sure what it is supposed to do. I use it to soak my feet in. I also spray my feet with it to cure atlete's foot.

hhmm for weightloss, I have heard of it, but not sure either what it is supposed to do. Foot soak sounds interesting. I use epsom salt.

Oh I have no problem with eating it, I use it in dressings and like you said, pickles. Just not quite sure how the weightloss works...

It's just acidic acid, it can't hurt you. If you have eaten pickles you swallow vinegar. I don't think vinegar is a cure all as far as weight loss is concerned.. nothing melts fat away, we have to do that with diet and exercise. My friend thinks it works, and she is thin... so for her (in her mind) it works.

I use it for de-greasing and anti-bacterial cleaning as most do. If you have limescale on porcelain, it's best to just coat in vinegar and let it sit for a good half hour before cleaning and everything comes off like magic. It's a safe cleaner for those fancy cooktops and other surfaces. I also find a tea made with apple cider vinegar and honey will both soothe and cure a stubborn sore throat or cold. I use vinegar also to make a cheap and quick substitute for buttermilk in pancake recipes. Just add a teaspoon or so white vinegar to a cup of milk and give it five minutes to begin to curdle, then add to the recipe to give it that buttermilk flavor.

Did you know that the "sour" in hot & sour soup is vinegar? If you want to try some, just use chicken broth, egg noodles or even vermicelli, a little salt, & vinegar--adding other ingredients if desired! Yum! Oh there are so many different uses for it it's amazing, its' definitely a household wonder! There's also apple cider vinegar and it's good for weight loss as it just supresses the appetite. I've used vinegar for stain removal the most, but it can be used to get stench out of stuff (whew vinegar sure is strong but like say out of carpets)

We'll be using a lot of vinegar and baking soda when we begin cleaning up my FIL's house. I think it's the cheapest and healthiest option. Much of the mess in his house is from cats spraying or peeing on things.. so bleach is not an option because once it's mixed with the ammonia it creates a nasty gas which could be dangerous. I've heard wonderful things about the power of vinegar and baking soda. So hopefully it does the trick on his place.

Ah, vinegar. There are SO many creative uses for it. I know one of the ways we use vinegar is when we have a fishbone stuck in our throat. Vinegar is acidic, so we have to swallow a teaspoon of vinegar to dissolve a small portion of it, so it can go more easily down your throat. Vinegar can also be used to occasionally destroy bacteria. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled, I had to make sure I didn't get infections in my mouth. So I had to frequently rinse my mouth out with either salt water or vinegar water, and it really helped with the pain.

We use vinegar for jellyfish bites, to decrease the sting. We always go to the beach with a bottle of vinegar in fact.

Im Canadian, so therefore I use vinegar on my French Fries I also now wash my veggies and fruits in vinegar and water to make sure I kill off just about any bacteria that might live on there. But a sure way to get rid of unwanted visitors (people I mean) is to use vinegar in your house...the smell if horrible and most people hate the smell......unless its on French Fries and you're in Canada of course!!

Well the one use I know of for vinegar is to clean glass. I know you add vinegar to water and clean windows, windshields and mirrors. I have used it before and it works real good. For some reason vinegar cuts through the dirt and grease.
