Is the ability to sing something you're born with or something you learn to do?

I've always wondered about this for very long. Do people learn to sing or are they naturally born with the gift. I am a pretty good singer, if I do say so myself, and I've always wondered whether I learned to do it or if I was born with this talent. I know my dad helped me master my singing voice as a child, so I don't know if I knew how to do it all along or if someone taught me. My dad was an avid singer, while my mom wasn't the best. I wonder if I got this from him? I know many amazing talented singers who just have an astounding voice that is just so great. And it just doesn't seem something that can be produced. It seems like something that you're born with and given as a gift from God. And that's what many people call a singing ability. They call it a gift. Like it's not something that can be learned or tamed. People make it seem like you are born with it and you just have to master the ability. Please share your opinions!

I think singing is one of those things that you have it or you don't.I would consider myself a pretty good singer also and I've never been to a singing class or taken lessons or anything, but I am not sure it could be that everyone has the ability to sing but they have to do like singing excersizes to really bring it out? I have also wondered this.nice question.

Singing is definitely one of those things. Some people can sing, and some people can't. It's great when you can.

Hi keeegan-ess, that's an interesting question! I know a couple who have zero knowledge of music and their daughter is a musician. There are two ways by which we learn something. Inspiration from what we are born with, that is , genetically acquired is one. The other type is to develop our already existing interest, maybe what we got from peers and outsiders, and learn more about it. There is no doubt that some are gifted and are prodigies. Mastering the ability depends on our will power and postive thinking!:)

I agree! Some people are just naturally gifted, and you can't really help it. I also think that there are some people that develop their singing, even if it is bad at first. After all, determination at the highest caliber is stronger than natural talent that isn't mastered.
