Do you prefer to live in a big city, a suburban area, or a rural place?

I know many people struggle with this question, especially when they are about to move from their parent's home to their own place. I've lived in a suburban area for most of my life, and I had to say that I enjoyed it. You had some of the big city amenities, but you also had some land and open area to just look around and not feel so stressed. I know some people prefer rural areas because they absolutely despise any aspect of a city, so they go to a place where it is all countryside and green grasses and very nice things. I don't know, but I feel like I want to move to a big city when I get the chance to move.

Right now I prefer to live in the big city because everything is convenient, such as going to school or work etc. When I am old and retired, then I prefer to live in the rural place since there will be fresh air there. And the life is relaxing. I can really enjoy my life.
I love China

Wow I've never been to China before. I plan to go there one of these days and experience the big city! But I also heard China is great for the amount of land in the countryside rural areas.

I have lived in many places in Holland. A bad neighbourhood in Rotterdam, a good neighbourhood in Eindhoven (both cities) and now in a small town. There are pro's and cons for all. In Rotterdam there was too much criminal activity but the people were really nice to you when you lived in their neighbourhood, they all looked out for eachother. It was us against the thugs. In Eindhoven was in that area no or little criminal activity and there I did not even know my neighbours, they all did their own thing and just said hello and that was it. In this little town, you know your neighbours and the street is nice to live in but a street further you know nobody.
The big pro's of a city is that there is always something to do. There are theater, cinema's and events held almost every day. Plus there are a lot of store's to choose from.
con's: criminals tend to be more active in cities, it is always busy with people in the center of the town (not always fun) and the overal tension on the street is much higher. Cars / traffic is bad.
In a small town, pro's, you know much people by name, people help each other when something happens, tension on street is nil. Not much cars.
Con's, few stores to choose from. Not much to do, no theater, one cinema with old movies, sometimes there are to little people in town.
I guess I would prefer a small town now because I have children. When I did not have children I liked the big city!

Ooh Holland sounds like such a fun place to be. It's funny because I actually have some friends that live in Holland. He's Indonesian, but he lives there, and he's doing pretty well there. There are so many pros and cons to both, as you mentioned. But sometimes they're just something you have to overlook. I mean, something can't be the best. I totally agree with you on the children thing though. It's much easier raising children in a small city or a suburban area. So they're not that accustomed to the big city, and suburban areas are more kid-friendly.

Iam currently living in suburban area and i would spent my whole life in suburban area, because suburban gives us the taste of rural as well as urban area a combination of both where you can enjoy both. whereas rural area is totally forested not actually forested but a lower developed area though you can enjoy the beauty of nature but getting into urban is quite difficult as your life spent in rural is used to it. Also in terms of Urban area It is quite a highly populated you may enjoy the cities growth with shopping malls, movies and all but getting back on rural life you just dont fit into it, and its quite difficult to live, I dont know about others but that's what i have experienced. So concluding i would prefer staying in Suburban area as it is halfway city as well as halfway rural that gives you the beauty to stay in suburban area.

I totally get what you're saying. As I said before, a suburban area IS a taste of both. You can get some openness from the concrete jungle, but you still get some of the shops, malls, and theaters that come with living in a big city. And a city usually has a higher crime rate. It really takes a certain type of person to live in both. Big cities can usually be stressful. I have so many friends who moved to New York to experience new things, but later left because they couldn't handle the fast-paced lifestyle that is New York. And rural areas are sometimes too much for people. You're completely inside this vast landscape, and that can become overwhelming for certain people also. But some people enjoy the quietness of the whole thing and see it as refreshing. But a suburban lifestyle is probably the best for parents, children, and developing families. Me? Hopefully I get to live in a big city. I'm a young adult. I think I can handle this lifestyle pretty well!

Hi keegan,
I always love to live in big city as i have been since my birth because of several reasons like you get basic facilities at the ease as compared to sub urban or rural areas like you get more hospitals, educational institutes are good, good stores to get good things remain open till late night, good law & orders, more facilities of entertainment, easy public transportation, good supply of electricity as in INDIA there is not in rural areas, more job opportunities & many more things which i think you won't get in rural areas.

That's true also. Rural areas usually don't have as much police and criminal protection services as the big city. But then again, they usually don't have much crime!

Definitely! There are so many things that come with big cities! You get everything in one place. But the crime factor is usually higher.

As for me, I'd prefer living in the city. This is due to the fact that all the competition, challenges and hard nosed activities can be found here. The competition is fierce and I love competition. I love the challenges of the big city. But of course, I would probably stay in a rural or suburban place when I get stressed out or needs a vacation. A little visit to those places is needed to reconfigure myself for the tough times in the big city. So I say I want to live in the big city with bits of stay in suburban or rural places

That seems really cool that you love competition. I love competition, but sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. But that's what a big city is, and I'm willing to try it out! There's probably always gonna be someone better than you, but you have to find your own nice in the whole system and do your best. That's good for you to realize that you need some relaxation. You need to get away from the city once in a while to get your sanity back. The big city can make people crazy sometimes!

I totally agree with you. Without competition, we probably wouldn't be where we are now. It totally drives society to come up with better and newer things. It's what's keeping us alive. And you're right about the expectations in the big city. It can become so stressful for people because they're expected to do things that some are just not capable of doing. That's why people say you "Go big or go home!" If you can't handle what is the big city, it'd be better to stay in a suburban area.

Good to know that you love competition too. That what drives a man to reach their full potential. But also bear in mind that no any individual can be able to know it all. This is a problem in the big city. A lot is expected from you and lot of results should be achieved. That I think is what makes people crazy in the big cities. This is also the reason why we need relaxation and off we should go to tranquil places like the rural areas. Always do your best in the big city. Everything there is super size, Big Effort means Big Rewards. Hehe!

I am at the present living in a suburban area. That's because I need to be within a short distance from the city downtown core where my Company is. Otherwise, I would really very much prefer to live in the countryside, a pleasant refreshing environment. I still go out to the countryside over the weekends, when the weather is favorable. That is my favorite way of relaxation after a long week at work.

It seems like you prefer the rural area more often! It really is interesting to see different viewpoints. I enjoy the greatness of the suburban areas also! Exactly what you said, you get to be close to the city while still enjoying some aspects of the country life. And I totally get you! The countryside is just so refreshing!

Yes i agree completely with your statement. I have lived in suburban areas and small city although i am living quite rural atm. I would love to get away to a big city, so in so many ways i share your dream. I would love to visit the biggest city in the world just to see how big it is.

i actually i love to live in the rural place also as long as it is safe and with awesome sceneries. i have been in the city for long time. i think there is not much problem living in the city only that i want to live right next to commercial areas and not just in residential areas where parking is big problem and the street is too small and place is just crowded and where there is not much privacy.

Yeah, a lot of people say that a rural area is the way to go. It's probably because you're around nature 24/7, and it just provides peace from everything! I know it a city it can be pretty stressful for some people because of the constant cars moving, people yelling, and the fact that some cities don't even go to sleep!

I myself prefer rural area. At this moment I live in a Rural area. THe thing I like most about it is that you can ride dirt bikes and four wheelers all day long and not have a run in with the cops. You do not disturb your neighbors because they are amish and have no phone to call the cops Or you have the neighbors who are out doing the same thing you are. What is also nice about living far out into the country is that the kids have a wider range of playing and the bad people tend to stay away because they do not have the gas money to come bother you

Oh yes it is. We can have huge bonfires whenever we want. We can camp and not have to travel that far. Play our music as loud as we want and have huge parties whenever we want. The one thing that does suck is having to travel at least 15-20 minutes just to go to a store. We have a store here but it is the only one so they charge like 6 dollars for a box of cheerio cereal. Ridiculous!

Oh my goodness that really does sound relaxing. I mean, you could NEVER EVER light a bonfire in a big city or a suburban area. People would call the cops on you in an instant. Well travelling to a store for 15-20 minutes isn't that bad, but the price of Cheerios definitely is! It's probably because not many people shop in that store because it's in a rural area. Are you ever scared of killers like one user mentioned?

Wow I never thought about it! Personally, I wouldn't live in a rural area, but you make it seem so enticing. It really is a place to achieve serenity and a sense of relaxation. I know that in the big city, it's FILLED with so many people that just get on your nerves. And sometimes you want to get away from it all. And being in a rural area just seems so peaceful. With nature surrounding you, and your family. It truly does sound peaceful.

Wow that does seem pretty nice! Having your own garden in your backyard, while still being able to enjoy the big city in a quick trip. And usually suburban areas are quiet. Not that quiet, but still pretty good.

I prefer to live in a big city for sure. I can't live without the options that a big city offers: stores opened 24 hours, big malls, fast internet and you always find what you are looking for. Of course that have some problems, like the violence and the car traffic (that you need a lot of patience to handle). But still, I wouldn't change for anything.

I love the city! But it is way too much money to live there for me :( Currently I live in a suburban area and I'm okay with it, I'm only about 20 minutes from the city and that's fine with me because I can't live in the middle of nowhere. The countryside gives me the creeps, I start to get paranoid and think I'm going to get sliced into a million pieces (maybe it's just because of all the horror movies I've seen and the missing peoples posters I see out there).

So true! Living in the big city comes with a price. Suburban areas are doable because they're kind of a taste of the big city without the emptiness of the rural area. I totally get what you're saying about the horror movies! I mean, if someone was attacking you, you couldn't really yell to someone for help because you'd be alone! Definitely pretty scary!

hi I grew up in a suburban area, it was nice to have good public transport so I didnt need more than 40 minutes to an hour to get to work. But when I got married and had the chance to move to a more rural place I did so.
Granted, you wont even have much public transportation by the time I get home now from work which is about 8:30 pm so my husband picks me up at the station by car. But the air is cleaner, its just healthier to live here and, unlike in city or bigger suburban areas people recognize you, greet you and chat some times too.

A rural area does sound like such a pleasant place to live. I mean, in the suburban or urban areas, you are closer to work, but you can't be the serenity of a rural area. As you said, the air is so much cleaner and it's healthier to live in. And usually people there aren't so hotheaded and angry all the time. You usually see those people in the urban area. That's an interesting point about everyone recognizing each other. It makes sense though. If you're living in a small place with a few amount of people, then you guys are bound to learn each other's names and the daily things you do.

that place here is not that small you learn each othes names. I commute 4 hours to work in my old hometown and 4 hours back in the afternoon and work 6 hours. So there is not much time left for socializing here in my new hometown.
But seeing these circumstances its double as lovely I have to admit, when I get to the bakery and am not only greeted with "Hello" but with my name.

Even though I love being in the country-side, feel much more free and inspired, less stressed and a lot calmer. However, I don't think I'd be able to survive living there..:P Big cities offer too important things for me that I need and that I can't live without. So I gotta vote city. However it's got to be a nice house or appartment in a nice part of the city.

That's true. People can't live without the big city! It offers so many things that today's people really really need. And the countryside is simply not an option for many. Sometimes stores and other facilities are too far, and it can be a burden making a journey across your town to get groceries or other life and household necessities. But in the big city it's definitely different. Things are so close to you, and you can get whatever you want fairly quickly.
