Myself I appreciate the finer things and the little things in life. Going out to the movies with the one I love is a lot of fun and I will continue to do it; however, I have been reading a lot about the trends that are coming about. Half of the movie theaters around the country have lost over 50% of their business since 3 years ago. How is this happening?
We say the older outside movies leave, which I loved btw, but now we are seeing the ones leave that have the nice comfy seats to go with them. For some reason I guess people just don't like going out as much as they did, or we are just too worried about different things. Why can't we take the time to go to the movies with the one we love, I mean don't most of us appreciate a night out instead of being inside most of the time? I know I do, what do you think? Do you like to watch movies in your home or do you prefer the movie theater?

Actually in India, the trend is quite different. Over the last few years too many multiplexes have come up and they are doing great business. I think a part of the reason is the sudden inflow of lot of 3D movies and big budget mega movies that people like to watch on the big screen. Also, there is a big crowd of multiplex crowd in India comprising of people who like to watch the movie on the big screen.
Cheers!

It is simple , many are way too busy, the prices of tickets are way too high and most of all, there aren't as many good films coming out. And then t.v.s are almost as large as the silver screen these days. Let me take these one at a time. With both partners working until 7pm , by the time they get home , it is way too late to go to the movies. In my area, two tickets to the movies can cost about 20.00! Money is tight So some couples can't afford it.But the worse thing is that if you are not into Romantic comedies, horror films,or action films , there are no films out there you Want to see. If there is a desire , then you take off work a little early or plan to see the early show, which in my area is 6.00 a ticket. But since the industry has been gearing films to 13 old boys they are scr2wed now. Most Teens can and do see better " film" on their PCs! So people are buying Huge T.V.s and either renting an old film or watching the movie when it comes to cable!

I love going out to the movies, some of the big blockbusters just aren't the same without the surround sound and big screen. I think the economy is just not allowing a family to go out and enjoy a movie. Ticket prices are close to 8 dollars each. A family of 4 that is 30 or more dollars just to see the movies. Add another 20 if you want to have snacks there. It just is not conducive to the current economic times to go out to the movies every weekend, like my husband and I once did.
If I had an extra 50 dollars a week, I would probably spend it at the movie theater, but I have a hard enough time finding $50 in my budget to get put into a savings account....I cannot justify going to the movies more than occasionally as a treat. The movie rental places and online streaming like Netflix give me more bang for my buck and it does not feel so frivilous to spend 10 dollars a month to watch as much as I want.

My husband and i seldom watch movies nowadays at those movie houses. But our daughter, would watch movies at them, with friends when there is a very nice movie they like. I think, they are more after the company of one another in watching the movie.
However, we as matured married persons are not for that anymore. We would rather watch it on the DVD at the confines of our home. It's cheaper and more comfortable that way.
With the emergence of those big flat screen televisions and the DVD , you would think twice in watching a movie at a moviehouse
Hence, movie theaters are dying out because of those DVDs which sometimes could be sold cheap. In addition, DVDs could be watched over and over again by other generations to come.

I don't think the movie theater experience is dying out to DVD's it's more like dying out to free online websites that show these movies illegally. I think most people would rather watch the movies for free than pay $13 for one ticket to see a movie in theaters. I love going out at night to the movie theater, the only part I dread is realizing how much money I spent on it all, so I've started limiting the amount I go out to the movie theater because I know I spend about $20 doing so.

honestly, i like watching movies in the movie house because i like the thought that i am watching the movie in a big dark room with a pop corn on the side. LOL. nowadays, due to low budget, i watch movies only when i really like the movie or if someone will ask me to go and watch movie with them. but if the movie is not that interesting to me, i would just download it on the net.

I think the movie theater experience is dying out because of the movie theater experience. I understand inflation but I still remember when a regular priced movie was $7.50 and a matinée was $4, maybe $4.25. NOW a matinée is more than the regular priced movies were when I first started paying for my own tickets. The scary part is I'm 30 which means I've been paying for my own movie tickets for roughly 15 years. That is not that long, in the grand scheme of things.
The point of my rambling is that because of the cost associated with going to the theater, I pick and choose what I see. I honestly think it's absurd to pay that kind of money...if you buy snacks from the concession stand, one person can spend more going to a movie than a couple to go out to dinner... to see a romance or comedy that has no big special effects, that is going to be the same movie whether I watch it on the projection screen or my home television. So I tend to only spend the money on horror and action movies.

I like both. Staying home and watching a movie can be relaxing without having to be around others and you can enjoy the movie.
I like going out though too. My husband likes to stay home from working so long during the day.
So I usually wind up going by myself.
I don't mind going out to a movie as long as others are considerate of others around them
I went and saw Prom last night and this couple moved from the middle of the theater to the very last row (which is where I was sitting)
they talked and talked all the way through.
It was very annoying. so that takes me back to enjoy being home when watching a movie.
And the big megaplex's have gone crazy with prices for admission and then your concession stand.
having been an employee and manager of a theater I understand the prices probably more than an average person.
But with the economy the way it is and so many people laid off, A family of four would pay almost 50.00 above to just see a movie, buy the concession and watch one show for about 90minutes.
I have netflix on my Wii so I prefer to stay home than pay those outlandish prices. I just simply can't afford it.
I do have a 1.50 show in our town so I try to see a movie once a week as that is within my budget.

I worked in a theater as an employee and manager.
It is a lot more work than what people see upfront.
Specially in the bigger megaplex theaters.
I think back in the 60's to 80's when I was growing up and starting a family, movies were cheaper. There were less movies put out on the screen so you had a chance to get your money back to the movie.
Concession everyone complaines no matter what decade it is. What most people don't understand, A new released movie is bid on.
Whichever theater bid the most they have to make that much money to pay for the first showing, and will not be able to get rid of the movie til the money is made off it. Then concession (popcorn, candy, soda) These items pay all the people that work there. Cleaning supplies, any maintenence...so anything made from concession is bought off that money on what is needed.
Each person is one person or family going to a movie and when it hits them 100.00 bucks for a first run movie in a first run theater then it can really get pricy
I now have Netflix and watch a lot of stuff off that.
And I am fortunate we have a 1.50 theater and it works for me not having the best seats from an older theater to not have to pay so much for a ticket.
If there is something I really want to see on a first run movie which is rare, then I do chuck the bucks out to go see it but thats only like 2 to 4 times a year.
I pretty much go to the 1.50 show or watch it on DVD 1.00 rental or Netflix.

I worked on brief summer at a dollar show movie theater and we were always busy. I agree that it is a ton of work. The stuff/junk that people left behind for us to clean up was ridiculous. How difficult was it to pick up the popcorn bucket and toss it on the way out...instead they kick it over and it is a huge mess for the employees to clean up and normally in a short amount of time.
I think the price has gone up to $2, but that is still affordable and i can justify it in my budget. True I have to wait about an additional month to see the movies, but to save me the money that is worth it.

i guess for you money is not a problem , over here for me the price of one ticket is like equal to how much we pay when we all go out to eat food, its really costly although once in a while is good to watch in the theatre

I love going to the theater so my family can enjoy something different to do with good family time but I haven't been able to afford to go anywhere even if it is free like going swimming at the lake because it cost so much money to go somewhere in gas but the theater cost lots of money per ticket and then your kids are going to want popcorn and a drink. The last time I went to the theater it cost $10 just for a deal of popcorn not counting the drink and the cost of the theater. It cost like about $10 per person for a ticket.

I love a good movie but I never go to a movie theater. I am bundled with my cable company and get all five premium networks with hundreds of other channels. So, I am very happy staying home and watching a movie on my TV. I am satisfied with what I am offered. I do not mind watching an older movie. I do not need to see the new movies on opening weekend or soon after. The Social Network has just shown on Starz. I was wanting to see that movie since it came out but I did not mind having to wait about a year to see it. I love staying home and watching a good movie.
I live next door to a very nice strip mall. And there is one of those movie complexes at the end of the mall that has about 10 or so screens. They seem to do a great business. The parking lot is often full or close to capacity. But the prices are so expensive. Maybe the cost of a movie (along with popcorn and drinks) has forced people to rent DVD's or sign up with netflix or a cable / satellite company.
