What to do about our small dog?

We have a small Chihuahua/Yorkie/Pomeranian mix dog. We have heard that to keep dog's from chewing your things, such as your socks and other objects... you should provide them with toys to chew on and keep them occupied. Well, we bought her a few chew toys. Then, she pretty much destroyed all of them within a couple of days. So, we thought maybe she needs something more durable, so that she can't destroy it. We bought her a couple of squeaky toys, that were supposed to be very durable. They felt durable, and we didn't think she would tear them up so quick. However, within a few days... it was almost destroyed just like all of the other toys we had given her. :( We sort of gave up for a while, and currently, she has no chew toys. Today, I discovered on of my socks laying on the bed all chewed up. :( What should we do? If we get her chew toys, she destroys them... and if we don't, she chews up other objects! Any suggestions?

Our well trained Pet Preiti - It took us months to train her.
Every puppy on earth will do this and you have to make your home puppy proof just as it is done for babies. There are chew-able bones available if your puppy is old enough to eat normal food. Your love for your puppy should give you patience to bear with her for a while. My dog was no less. She even brought our venetian blinds down, chewed on her bed, you name it and she tore things to pieces but we put up with it and today she is the most dignified, lovable pet I have seen anywhere. Happy puppy training Angelee! And one thing never ever scold her but just make a sound with rolled paper and use a word or two such as 'No' and whatever your puppy's name is. That sound will have some effect on her. And this, only if she is around 3 months or older.

So Suzie is a big girl (I got her name from sooner...'s box). In that case you need a totally different approach."Idle mind is a devil's workshop". She needs occupation and someone to be with her. Also feed her well. I suppose she gets her usual exercise which is a must.

I have bought Tennis Balls for Preiti - 2 dozens of them and she plays with them. I also spend time with her.

Hi allknowing, My dog is not a puppy, she's over a year old. ^_^ She doesn't chew up anything when she has a toy... but if she has no toys (because she destroyed them all) she turns to other things she can use as toys. I think I should try getting her a bone, and see how that works. Hopefully, she will like it.

Hi Angelee, We have a dog just like Suzi - absolutely destroys any toy you leave with her, she's about a year and a half old Red Heeler. I have to agree with Octav1 that your dog is most likely bored and has tons of excess energy - the walk would certainly help. One thing we've found in the line of toys is the Kong Stuffies which you can put a couple treats inside - not the regular ones with the single big opening on the end, but the ones that have slits and little rubber flaps on both ends. If your dog is food motivated in the least, she'll love em. Our dog will work at one of these for an hour or more trying to get the treats out. Another thing we found helps is if you can't get out to exercise the dog, try having a couple tug-toys that you can play with your dog with - we have taken to supervising when the dog is playing so that she can't spend excess time just chewing on the toys. (making her chase and return the toys to us.)

You're welcome! I'd love to hear how things turn out with Suzi. @sooner - The treadmill is a good idea too - I'm looking at getting one for our dog before the winter sets in - trust me, going for hour long walks at 30 below is not my idea of fun

I believe they do this for a while and then slow down the chewing after a while. I would say simply try and get some from any dollar store you can as this way they are cheaper and less costlier then the pet stores. I think keep all socks and shoes out of plain view for a while and hope your puppy outgrows the chewing habit soon.

The thing is, she's not a puppy. :( She's over a year old... she only chews on things when she has no toys. But she has no toys because she destroyed them! LOL

I think she chews on toys because she's bored. Dogs need something to keep them occupied. I will make a suggestion that my friend makes to every dog owner that complains about their dog destroying things: Take the dog for a loooong walk early in the morning, before her breakfast. (an hour would be just fine) After the long walk, give her the morning meal and then she will be so tired and satisfied that she won't feel the need to chew on things. My friend has a favorite quote about dogs: "a tired dog is a happy dog". I think she's perfectly right.

Hi Octav1, Hmm... that's a good idea! :D I will definitely try that! However, I may only be able to walk her for about 30 minutes most of the time. That should still be okay, right?

LOL, I don't even have a treadmill. I wish I did though. :/ I love sitting on them and cranking them all the way up. :D

sounds like you have a beast of a dog I would get one of those huge rope ties that come in knots. You should probably get one that is bigger than him or her.

LOL, she'd probably shred one even if it was 6 foot long and a foot wide! :D

Ropes are always a good substitute to keep them occupied. My pitbull loves them and they last about a week. I'm sure your dog would keep them much longer and kong toys are one of my favorite chew toys.

I too was going to suggest the rope toy. Did you get a super big one that is meant for big dogs? That's what worked with our pup. Hope this helps! :)

Hi hardworker, If I get her another rope toy, I believe I will just supervise her while she plays, and play with her... that way she doesn't spend hours at a time chewing them up, eventually destroying them. :-)
